In a move underscoring the ongoing fight against digital fraud, a recent announcement from the WeChat Security Center highlights the crackdown on individuals aiding and abetting online scams. The company is intensifying its efforts to dismantle the support networks that facilitate cybercrime.
The focus is on what are termed “tool people” – individuals who, knowingly or unknowingly, assist criminal groups in carrying out fraudulent activities. These helpers provide crucial support to the fraudsters, ranging from supplying bank accounts and SIM cards to facilitating financial transactions and offering technical assistance.
Such actions are not only detrimental to users, causing financial loss and damage, but they also erode the integrity of the platform. Moreover, they potentially violate the law, specifically the “Crime of Assisting Information Network Criminal Activities.”
Those found guilty of this offense face up to three years in prison or detention, along with the possibility of fines.
The WeChat Security Center is strongly advising users against participating in seemingly innocuous activities that could inadvertently support cybercriminals. The lure of quick money through actions like renting out WeChat accounts, recruiting individuals, creating groups, or sending out unsolicited content can often mask the significant damage inflicted on others.
The following are examples of activities that could constitute assisting information network criminal activities, and should be strictly avoided:
1. Renting or selling bank cards, phone cards, or online accounts.
2. Registering accounts, setting up online storefronts, or providing identity verification for others.
3. Helping to unblock accounts, transferring group ownership, or acting as paid actors in online scams.
4. Recruiting individuals to join groups, posting prohibited content, or sending unsolicited packages.
5. Adding others and sending them malicious files designed to compromise their devices.
6. Providing mobile phones, recording equipment, or other technical support, including making specific phone calls.
