OpenAI and SoftBank Forge $1 Billion Partnership to Power AI Infrastructure
A strategic alliance has been struck between artificial intelligence leader OpenAI and Japanese tech giant SoftBank, with a significant $1 billion investment earmarked for SB Energy. This collaboration is designed to accelerate the expansion of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence infrastructure, a critical component of its ambitious growth plans.
The partnership is a key element of the larger “Stargate” initiative, a $500 billion commitment previously announced by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. As part of this new agreement, SB Energy will spearhead the construction and operation of OpenAI’s 1.2 gigawatt data center in Milam County, Texas. This facility, initially disclosed in September, underscores the escalating demand for the immense computational power required to train and deploy advanced AI models.
“This collaboration with SB Energy represents a powerful synergy, combining their established expertise in data center infrastructure and energy development with OpenAI’s profound knowledge in data center engineering,” stated Greg Brockman, President of OpenAI. “The outcome is a robust and efficient pathway to scale compute through the development of large, highly optimized AI data centers.”
SB Energy, which benefits from the backing of both SoftBank and Ares Management, is actively involved in the development, ownership, and operation of energy projects across the United States.
Beyond the substantial financial investment, SB Energy has also established a preferred partnership with OpenAI and SoftBank to pioneer a novel approach to data center construction. This innovative model aims to integrate OpenAI’s proprietary data center designs with SB Energy’s proven capabilities in rapid deployment, cost management, and streamlined energy delivery. The company is currently developing several multi-gigawatt data center campuses, with initial facilities slated for operation this year.
The relationship between SoftBank, under the leadership of Masayoshi Son, and OpenAI has deepened significantly over the past year. This intensified collaboration follows SoftBank’s lead role in OpenAI’s monumental $40 billion financing round, which was the largest private tech funding event on record. That round also saw participation from major investor Microsoft, alongside Coatue, Altimeter, and Thrive.
This strategic pivot towards AI is evident in SoftBank’s recent move to divest its entire stake in chipmaker Nvidia for $5.83 billion, a decision signaling a clear focus on its substantial investment in OpenAI.
OpenAI, the company behind the groundbreaking ChatGPT, continues to operate with a significant cash burn as it relentlessly pursues profitability. This reality underscores its ongoing reliance on substantial external capital. In recent months, the AI firm has secured over $1.4 trillion in infrastructure deals to build out the data centers deemed essential for meeting escalating global demand. CEO Sam Altman projected that OpenAI was on track to achieve an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $20 billion in 2025, with aspirations to reach hundreds of billions in sales by 2030.
