Meta has appointed Dina Powell McCormick as its new president and vice chairman, a move signaling a significant expansion of the tech giant’s strategic leadership. This appointment, announced on Monday, places Powell McCormick at the heart of Meta’s management team, tasked with shaping and executing the company’s future growth trajectory.
Powell McCormick, who previously served on Meta’s board before a brief departure, brings a formidable background in global finance and international relations. Her experience includes a stint as deputy national security advisor under President Donald Trump and a role within Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s administration. This blend of high-level political and financial acumen is seen by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as a key asset. “Dina’s experience at the highest levels of global finance, combined with her deep relationships around the world, makes her uniquely suited to help Meta manage this next phase of growth,” Zuckerberg stated.
The appointment also marks another significant hire from the former Trump administration, following the recent recruitment of Curtis Joseph Mahoney as chief legal officer, who previously served as a deputy U.S. trade representative. Donald Trump himself lauded the decision on his social media platform, Truth Social, calling Powell McCormick “a fantastic, and very talented, person, who served the Trump Administration with strength and distinction!” Powell McCormick’s extensive career also includes 16 years in senior leadership at Goldman Sachs and a recent executive role at BDT & MSD Partners.
This leadership enhancement coincides with Meta’s ambitious push into artificial intelligence infrastructure. Just hours after the announcement of Powell McCormick’s role, Zuckerberg unveiled “Meta Compute,” a new initiative aimed at scaling the company’s AI capabilities. Meta is reportedly investing billions of dollars to expand its data center capacity, a crucial step in competing with rivals like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
“Meta is planning to build tens of gigawatts this decade, and hundreds of gigawatts or more over time,” Zuckerberg shared on Threads. He emphasized that “How we engineer, invest, and partner to build this infrastructure will become a strategic advantage.” To lead this monumental undertaking, Santosh Janardhan, responsible for Meta’s global data center operations, and Daniel Gross, who will head a new long-term capacity strategy group, have been appointed.
Crucially, Powell McCormick will work in tandem with Janardhan and Gross, focusing on forging partnerships with governments and sovereign entities to facilitate the construction, deployment, investment, and financing of Meta’s expansive infrastructure projects. This strategic alignment underscores Meta’s recognition of the complex geopolitical and financial considerations involved in building global AI capabilities.
