Zoom’s $2B-$4B Potential Gain from Anthropic Investment: Baird

Zoom’s stock jumped 11% following a Baird report estimating its investment in AI startup Anthropic could be worth $2-4 billion. This strategic stake, potentially an 78x return on Zoom’s $51 million outlay, could offer a significant boost as Zoom seeks to reignite revenue growth. Analysts see this as a key asset, especially with speculation of an Anthropic IPO, positioning Zoom to benefit from the AI boom beyond its core video conferencing business.

Zoom’s stock surged on Monday, climbing 11% after a report from Baird analysts highlighted the significant potential value of the video conferencing giant’s investment in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. Baird estimates this stake could be worth anywhere from $2 billion to $4 billion, a figure contingent on various dilution scenarios.

This strategic investment, initially disclosed in May 2023 as part of a partnership, saw Zoom Ventures contribute to Anthropic. While the exact financial details of Zoom’s initial investment were not made public, company filings revealed $51 million in “strategic investments” during that quarter. Baird’s analysis suggests a substantial portion, if not all, of this amount was allocated to Anthropic.

Given Anthropic’s current valuation, which is reportedly around $350 billion, Baird’s analysts project that Zoom could realize a return of approximately 78 times its initial outlay.

“While the market’s attention has largely been on Zoom’s (ZM) efforts to reignite revenue growth and capitalize on AI opportunities, a less visible but potentially lucrative asset might be its $51 million investment in Anthropic from 2023,” the analysts stated in their note.

Zoom experienced an unprecedented surge in demand during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, becoming an indispensable tool for remote work and communication. However, as pandemic restrictions eased and a return to in-office work became more prevalent, the company’s stock saw a significant decline from its peak.

The investment in Anthropic is now being viewed as a potential turnaround factor. Baird’s analysts are optimistic, noting, “Zoom is directly aligned with the success of Anthropic’s Claude. With increasing speculation about an Anthropic IPO, this investment could become even more substantial.”

This move positions Zoom to benefit not only from its core business but also from a potentially high-growth venture in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The strategic decision to invest in a leading AI developer like Anthropic could diversify Zoom’s revenue streams and offer a hedge against the cyclical nature of its primary market. As AI continues to integrate into business operations, Zoom’s early stake provides a compelling angle for future growth and shareholder value.
