Following a public falling out with former U.S. President Donald Trump, tech titan Elon Musk is proposing the formation of a new political party in the United States, aiming to represent the country’s “80% in the middle.”
Musk took to X, formerly Twitter, to gauge public interest. He posed the question: “Should there be a new party in America that is truly in the middle and represents the vast majority?” The response was overwhelming, with over 5.6 million users casting their votes, and a substantial 80.4% expressing support for the idea of a new “America Party.”
It’s worth noting that Musk, a South African-born citizen, is ineligible to run for U.S. President due to the Constitution’s natural-born citizen requirement.
The rift between Musk and Trump comes after a period where Musk was a vocal supporter and advisor to the former president. However, the relationship has deteriorated rapidly.
Divergences began to surface when Musk criticized Trump’s proposed $2.4 trillion tax and spending plan, escalating into pointed exchanges. Musk called Trump’s “big and beautiful bill” a “disgusting abomination.”
In response, Trump expressed disappointment in Musk, and took to his own social media platform to accuse Musk of being “crazy.”
On June 7th, Trump issued a warning: Trump declared that Musk would face “very serious consequences” should he provide financial support to Democratic candidates who oppose the Republican budget proposal.
The former president stated, “If he does that, he will pay a price,” though he did not specify any action. Trump added that he has no desire to mend his relationship with Musk, stating, “I think the relationship is over.”
The acrimony between the two has played out on social media, fueled by disagreements over the Republican-led budget. Trump has also accused Musk of showing “great disrespect for the office of President.”
Furthermore, Trump has hinted at the potential revocation of government contracts and subsidies for Musk’s companies, though no action has been taken yet. He emphasized the strong unity within the Republican Party, and expressed confidence in the budget’s passage.
