Furthermore, Google’s strategic integration of Intrinsic, a robotics software company, from its “Other Bets” portfolio into the core company, signals a strong intent to position Intrinsic as “The Android of robotics.” Intrinsic’s mandate includes focusing on the manufacturing sector and collaborating with Google’s Gemini and infrastructure teams, potentially contributing to the development of Google’s own data center capabilities.

The company’s increased focus on robotics was also evident in its strategic hiring of key talent. Last November, Google DeepMind recruited Aaron Saunders, the former CTO of Boston Dynamics, a move that underscored the growing importance of robotics expertise within the organization.

However, Google’s expanding robotics initiatives have not been without internal debate. Concerns have reportedly surfaced among some DeepMind employees regarding Boston Dynamics’ long-standing contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense, highlighting the ethical considerations surrounding AI applications in sensitive areas.

Beyond Google, robotics is emerging as a critical frontier for AI across the broader tech industry. A compelling example is Bedrock Robotics, an autonomous vehicle technology startup for construction machinery. Founded by veterans from Waymo and Segment, the two-year-old company recently secured $270 million in Series B funding, valuing it at $1.75 billion. This funding round was notably led by Alphabet’s investment arm, CapitalG, alongside Valor Atreides A.I. Fund and Nvidia’s venture arm, 8VC. This significant investment in a construction robotics startup underscores the vast commercial potential and investor confidence in the future of autonomous physical systems.
