The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has issued a stark warning, targeting a significant number of U.S. technology companies with operations in the Middle East. Prominent firms such as Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, and Google are among those named as potential targets in a retaliatory move for recent U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran.
The IRGC declared on Tuesday that these 18 tech companies would be considered “legitimate targets.” This declaration signals a potential escalation of cyber and physical threats, underscoring the increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape and its direct impact on the global tech industry.
According to a translated post on a Telegram channel affiliated with the IRGC, the alleged attacks were slated to commence at 8 p.m. Tehran time on Wednesday, April 1 (10:30 a.m. ET). The warning also urged employees of these targeted companies to vacate their workplaces immediately for their own safety, framing the potential actions as a direct consequence of perceived Iranian casualties.
The communiqué stated, “From now on, for every assassination, an American company will be destroyed.” This aggressive rhetoric suggests a strategic intent to disrupt U.S. economic interests and influence by targeting the technological infrastructure and operations within the region.
The expanded list of companies designated as potential targets includes Cisco, HP, Intel, Oracle, IBM, Dell, Palantir, JP Morgan, Tesla, GE, Spire Solutions, Boeing, and the UAE-based AI company G42. This diverse group encompasses hardware manufacturers, software providers, cloud service giants, financial institutions, and cutting-edge AI developers, highlighting the broad scope of the IRGC’s threats.
This development follows earlier Iranian strikes on Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the Middle East earlier this month. These attacks reportedly caused disruptions to various applications and digital services across the United Arab Emirates, demonstrating Iran’s capacity to inflict tangible damage on critical digital infrastructure.
The Middle East has become a crucial nexus for global technology investment, particularly in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Major U.S. tech firms have been strategically funnelling substantial resources into the region, attracted by its competitive advantages such as lower energy costs and ample land availability for large-scale data center development. This IRGC threat directly jeopardizes these significant investments and the ongoing technological expansion in the region.
In response to the threats, a spokesperson for Intel stated, “The safety and wellbeing of our team is our number one priority. We are taking steps to safeguard and support our workers and facilities in the Middle East and are actively monitoring the situation.”
Other companies listed in the Telegram post have been approached for comment. Google and JP Morgan declined to provide statements regarding the IRGC’s threats.
