Wang Shuguo on Fuyao University of Technology’s Enrollment of 50: Tailored Learning Paths for Every Student

In a move signaling a deep commitment to individualized education and future-focused research, Wang Shuguo, President of the newly established Fanya University of Technology, has shed light on the institution’s core philosophy. Responding to the adjusted initial undergraduate enrollment target—now set at 50 students instead of 100—Wang emphasized a highly personalized approach.

“We are designing customized learning programs for each student, carefully crafting a pathway geared toward research,” Wang explained. “Our aim is to cultivate pioneers, not followers.”

Beyond the specifics of the curriculum, Wang also addressed the underlying motivation behind establishing the private university. He highlighted the critical role of entrepreneurs in shaping a nation’s trajectory. According to Wang, observing how successful individuals reinvest their wealth—whether it’s through consumption, or through investment in education, technology and the development of young people—offers a clear barometer of a society’s maturity and trajectory.

Wang stated his belief that when a nation’s business leaders champion education, technology, and the advancement of future generations, it signifies a society’s growth. This conviction is also the driving force behind his involvement in private education.

Fanya University of Technology is also pushing the boundaries of traditional academic structures. The institution is envisioning an “8-year university” model, seamlessly integrating undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. The ultimate goal is to enable students to earn their doctoral degrees by the age of 26.

This ambitious initiative aims to combat the intensifying “academic rat race” prevalent in current educational systems. By streamlining learning paths, improving educational efficiency, and maintaining high academic standards, the university intends to provide students with a more direct and impactful route to their goals.

Looking ahead, Wang has plans to gradually expand the university’s student body to between 800 and 1,000 over a period of five to eight years.

Wang’s past experience includes leading two prestigious “Double First-Class” universities, Harbin Institute of Technology and Xi’an Jiaotong University. His appointment as President of Fanya University of Technology represents a notable “unpaid” return to the higher education sector following his retirement from Xi’an Jiaotong University last year.
