Ro Khanna Challenges Elon Musk to Televised Debate Amidst DOGE Controversy

Congressman Ro Khanna has challenged Elon Musk to a televised debate concerning the impact of Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) budget cuts, particularly on USAID. The dispute stems from a heated social media exchange where Khanna blamed Musk’s actions for potential child deaths, and Musk threatened legal action and called Khanna a “liar.” This confrontation highlights the ongoing debate over wealth taxes and billionaire influence in politics.

In a move that escalates a heated public feud, Congressman Ro Khanna has formally challenged trillionaire tech mogul Elon Musk to a televised debate. The proposed discussion centers on the impact of significant budget cuts implemented under Musk’s controversial “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) initiative, a direct response to an acrimonious social media exchange between the California Democrat and the owner of X.

“I challenge him to a debate on CNN, on CNBC, or at a university – he can choose the venue,” Khanna stated in an interview. “Let’s debate the ramifications of DOGE’s actions, and let’s discuss why I advocate for a wealth tax. If he truly believes in free speech and open discourse, this would be an opportunity to engage on these critical issues.”

The challenge follows a fiery exchange on Musk’s platform, X, where the tech magnate suggested legal action, and even imprisonment, for Khanna. The congressman had previously asserted that Musk must be held accountable for potential loss of life resulting from the effective dissolution of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) under DOGE’s purview, an assertion that clearly provoked Musk.

Should this debate materialize, it would pit one of the world’s wealthiest individuals against a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, widely seen as a potential White House contender in 2028. This clash arrives at a pivotal moment for Democrats, who are actively pursuing new taxation measures on the wealthy and intensifying their critique of billionaire influence in politics.

“It’s certainly unsettling to be targeted by the world’s richest person, wielding the largest platform on X, with calls for my imprisonment and threats of legal action,” Khanna remarked. “I am confronting the wealthiest individual globally, and I sincerely hope he is willing to engage in a substantive debate.”

Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The online conflict ignited early Monday when Musk took issue with Khanna’s recent reference to a study published in The Lancet. This study posited that cuts to USAID could lead to the deaths of over 4.5 million children. DOGE, under Musk’s leadership, significantly curtailed USAID’s operations as part of a broader federal government downsizing effort aimed at identifying and eliminating perceived inefficiencies.

In a podcast appearance over the weekend, Khanna articulated his stance: “Elon Musk needs to answer for the 4.5 million children around the world whom he may have condemned to death by dismantling USAID.”

Musk, in a reply to a New York Post report on Khanna’s comments, declared, “Time to sue this liar.” He further elaborated, “The standard DOGE applied was straightforward: provide contact information for aid recipients to verify legitimacy and prevent fraud. The reality is that funds were being channeled to corrupt politicians under the guise of aid. Liars and insider traders like ‘Ro the Robber’ belong in prison!”

Musk continued his barrage with a series of posts critical of Khanna.

This public confrontation is not the first instance of Khanna facing opposition from figures within his former Silicon Valley constituency. Earlier this year, a number of his erstwhile supporters reportedly threatened to withdraw their backing following his endorsement of a wealth tax in California. Such a tax, at its core, aims to redistribute wealth from the nation’s wealthiest individuals to fund public services and reduce income inequality, a policy that often sparks debate among those who benefit most from the current economic system.

During his interview, Khanna acknowledged that Musk had, at times, been supportive, even praising a book written by the congressman and his stance against censorship of a story concerning Hunter Biden’s business dealings.

Khanna suggested that Musk “lost control” of his reaction to the Lancet study. However, Khanna, who has played a significant role in advocating for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, stated his unwavering commitment to challenging economic disparities, despite representing a highly affluent congressional district. “The most crucial moral test for the Democratic Party today is whether it will effectively counter the Trump administration and confront the entrenched oligarchy,” he asserted. “Through my work on the Epstein files and now by directly challenging Elon Musk, I am actively engaged in these critical fights.”
