Reddit Stock Tumbles on Report of Unrenewed Google AI Deal

Reddit shares fell 8% following a report that the company is considering restricting Google’s AI data access. This comes amid concerns that Google’s AI Overviews are hurting publisher traffic, impacting Reddit’s existing $60 million annual deal with Google. Reddit is re-evaluating its partnerships, aiming to ensure they drive business value and recognize the unique worth of its data. The company, which also partners with OpenAI, recently exceeded earnings expectations, highlighting the financial importance of its data licensing. Investors await further insights in their Q2 earnings report.

Shares of Reddit experienced a notable dip of 8% on Wednesday following a report by The Wall Street Journal detailing discussions about potentially restricting Google’s access to its content for artificial intelligence training purposes. This development comes as Reddit’s stock is already down approximately 25% year-to-date.

The current situation stems from a deal struck in 2024, granting the search giant the right to utilize Reddit’s vast repository of user-generated content to train its sophisticated AI models. However, concerns are surfacing within Reddit regarding the efficacy and long-term benefits of this agreement. According to the Journal, citing individuals familiar with the matter, Reddit is now re-evaluating the partnership as Google’s AI Overviews—a feature that directly answers search queries without requiring users to click through to external websites—have demonstrably reduced traffic to many publishers.

The existing agreement, reportedly valued at $60 million annually, appears to be nearing its expiration, and both companies are reportedly engaged in discussions concerning a potential renewal. A spokesperson for Reddit communicated to us that the company is approaching these negotiations with a core business principle in mind: “focusing on doing what’s best for Reddit.”

“Significant changes have occurred since these initial agreements were established, yet our objectives remain constant: ensuring that all partnerships are drivers for our business and acknowledge the distinct value embedded within Reddit’s data,” the statement elaborated. “There exists a broad spectrum of approaches to achieve this, and these are precisely the elements we intend to explore at the negotiation table.”

This sentiment reflects a broader trend observed across the digital publishing landscape. Many media and content platforms are reassessing their relationships with leading AI firms. This reevaluation is partly driven by the observable impact of AI-generated summaries on search traffic, leading some companies to explore legal avenues to safeguard their intellectual property. For instance, Chegg previously filed a lawsuit against Google, alleging that the company’s AI summaries negatively impacted its traffic and revenue streams.

In response to such concerns, Google has consistently maintained that its AI features are designed to support and grow publisher audiences. A similar sentiment was reiterated when responding to The Wall Street Journal’s report, with Google emphasizing that its AI capabilities help creators and publishers expand their reach.

Beyond its dealings with Google, Reddit has also established a strategic partnership with OpenAI. This collaboration allows the maker of ChatGPT to leverage Reddit’s content for its AI model training, contributing significantly to Reddit’s data licensing business unit. This segment played a crucial role in fueling a stronger-than-expected earnings report last quarter.

During the first quarter, Reddit surpassed analyst expectations, with revenue climbing an impressive 69% year-over-year. The company reported earnings per share of $1.01, significantly exceeding the anticipated 58 cents, and revenue reached $663 million, outperforming the projected $611 million.

Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, acknowledged the importance of these alliances during the company’s earnings call, stating, “We have significant partnerships with both Google and OpenAI. These are profoundly meaningful to us, and I believe the feeling is mutual. We continue to place a high value on them.”

Investors will be closely watching Reddit’s upcoming second-quarter earnings report, scheduled for July 30th, for further insights into the company’s performance and its strategic direction regarding AI partnerships.
