Coinbase Shares Skid as Crypto Winter Bites Deeper, Missing Earnings Expectations
Coinbase shares faced downward pressure in extended trading following the cryptocurrency exchange’s second-quarter earnings report, which revealed a wider-than-anticipated loss. This performance underscores the persistent challenges plaguing the digital asset market, even as the company endeavors to diversify its revenue streams.
For the quarter ending June 30, Coinbase’s financial metrics fell short of Wall Street projections. Analysts, in a survey by LSEG, had forecast a loss of 17 cents per share on revenue of $1.3 billion. However, the company reported a loss per share of $1.36, with revenue coming in at $1.2 billion. This marks the third consecutive quarter where Coinbase has missed analyst expectations on both key metrics.
The company posted a net loss of $359.5 million, or $1.36 per share, a significant shift from the $1.43 billion profit, or $5.14 per share, recorded in the same period of the previous year. It’s important to note that Coinbase’s reported net income can be subject to considerable fluctuation due to accounting standards that mandate the valuation of its substantial crypto holdings at prevailing market prices at the close of each quarter. This can lead to significant swings in reported earnings, irrespective of whether any assets have been transacted.
Revenue for the quarter declined to $1.2 billion, down from $1.5 billion a year prior. Following the earnings release, Coinbase’s stock experienced a dip of over 7% in after-hours trading.
The broader market environment in the second quarter contributed to the subdued performance. Bitcoin’s price largely traded within a narrow range, and while conditions showed some improvement compared to the previous quarter, flows into Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) transitioned from inflows to a sustained period of outflows. A challenging macroeconomic landscape, characterized by elevated interest rates and general market volatility, also dampened investor appetite for risk assets.
Despite the overall downturn, a notable bright spot emerged from Coinbase’s subscription revenue, which constituted a larger proportion of the company’s overall business. This presented a positive signal for investors seeking evidence of the company’s diversification strategy gaining traction. Subscription revenue reached $555 million, while transaction revenue amounted to $599 million. While both categories fell short of analyst expectations and also declined from the previous year, they reflect the ongoing headwinds within the broader cryptocurrency sector.
Coinbase has been actively working to demonstrate its potential to expand beyond its core cryptocurrency trading operations. A pivotal element of this strategy involves the development and rollout of products under the subscription umbrella, aiming to generate revenue streams that are less susceptible to the volatility of trading volumes.
Within its core trading business, CEO Brian Armstrong highlighted that Coinbase achieved a new all-time high in market share for crypto trading. He presented this achievement as proof of Coinbase’s resilience and ability to perform across various market conditions.
Armstrong articulated this strategic shift, stating in the company’s earnings release, “Coinbase is no longer a bet just on the price of bitcoin. All of financial services are getting updated by crypto, whether that’s trading or payments or lending, and Coinbase is the best-positioned company in the world to power this.”
Further dissecting the revenue streams, Coinbase’s stablecoin revenue experienced an unexpected decline to $292 million, a decrease of $17 million compared to the second quarter of 2025. Analysts surveyed by StreetAccount had projected this segment’s revenue to be around $327.2 million. This contraction in stablecoin-related revenue suggests underlying pressures in on-chain activity and potential shifts in demand for these digital dollar alternatives. The company’s ability to re-ignite growth in this area will be a key indicator of its success in navigating the evolving stablecoin landscape and its regulatory implications.
