Samsung Boosts Shareholder Returns with Potential $80 Billion Following SK Hynix Buyback

Samsung Electronics announced a massive shareholder return package, projected between 90-110 trillion won in 2026, the largest ever by a Korean company. This initiative aims to boost investor value amidst strong AI-driven demand for memory chips and intense competition with SK Hynix in the HBM market. The plan includes interim cash dividends and future distributions via dividends or buybacks.

Samsung Electronics is making a significant statement to its investors, unveiling a comprehensive shareholder return package that positions it at the forefront of capital distribution among South Korea’s leading chipmakers. This announcement follows a strong performance week for the sector, highlighted by SK Hynix’s own substantial share buyback program.

The tech behemoth revealed on Friday its projection for shareholder returns to aggregate between 90 trillion won and 110 trillion won (approximately $65.1 billion to $79.52 billion) in 2026. This ambitious figure, the company stated, represents “the largest ever by a Korean company,” underscoring a strategic shift towards maximizing shareholder value.

This move comes as Samsung aggressively aims to close the gap with its domestic rival, SK Hynix, particularly in the critical high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chip market, which is integral to the burgeoning artificial intelligence ecosystem. The company’s stock performance has been robust, reflecting investor confidence, with its shares appreciating around 135% year-to-date.

Further bolstering its commitment to shareholders, Samsung announced an interim cash dividend payment of approximately 30 trillion won in the third quarter, in addition to its regular quarterly distributions. The precise details of this payout are slated for finalization during a board meeting scheduled for late October.

This latest shareholder return initiative from Samsung arrives on the heels of SK Hynix’s own announcement of a 40 trillion won share buyback program, signaling a competitive landscape for investor rewards within the South Korean semiconductor industry.

Samsung has indicated that the scope and specific mechanisms of the remaining shareholder returns – which could involve a combination of cash dividends, share buybacks, and cancellations – will be determined at a board meeting in late January 2027. This forward-looking approach allows for flexibility in adapting to market conditions and future capital needs.

Friday’s announcement builds upon Samsung’s existing 2024-2026 shareholder return program. Under that framework, the company committed to returning 50% of its free cash flow generated between 2024 and 2026, while ensuring annual regular dividends of 9.8 trillion won. This established policy underscores a consistent strategy of prioritizing investor returns.

As part of its broader corporate value enhancement plan unveiled in March, Samsung detailed its financial activities for 2024 and 2025. During this period, the company distributed 20.9 trillion won in cash dividends and allocated 8.4 trillion won towards share repurchases for cancellation, demonstrating a clear strategy of returning capital to shareholders through multiple avenues.
