Consider Jung Chae-rin, a second-year student at Sogang University’s Department of System Semiconductor Engineering. This four-year program, established in close partnership with global memory-chip giant SK Hynix, offers students a direct and secure pathway into the company’s workforce upon completion of their studies.

Similarly, at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), Kim Tae-rin, a third-year student, is enrolled in the Department of Intelligent Software. This comprehensive five-year integrated bachelor’s and master’s program, co-developed with Samsung Electronics, focuses on AI software development. While her path also significantly enhances her employment prospects, securing a position with Samsung requires successfully navigating a separate, albeit streamlined, hiring process.

These corporate-sponsored academic programs fall under a distinct category within South Korea’s higher education landscape, known as “contract departments.” Under this model, corporations actively contribute to the development of university courses, provide essential financial backing, and establish clear entry pipelines for qualified students to join their ranks.

SK Hynix, a leader in semiconductor technology, has cultivated strategic alliances with a number of prestigious South Korean universities, including Korea University and Hanyang University. Its main competitor, Samsung Electronics, has forged similar collaborations with institutions such as Yonsei University, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology.

Both Kim and Jung shared with us that these programs offer crucial financial support and a substantially increased degree of career certainty. Data compiled by Seoul-based Jongro Academy highlights a significant surge in applications to these contract departments. The number of applicants seeking entry into programs linked with major corporations saw an increase of over 38% compared to the previous year. This trend extends beyond the semiconductor sector, encompassing courses associated with automotive manufacturer Hyundai Motor and mobile network operator LG Uplus, underscoring a broad industry demand for specialized talent.

The Escalating Battle for AI Talent

For aspiring professionals eager to capitalize on the burgeoning AI revolution, these specialized university programs have become exceptionally attractive. This is largely driven by the substantial compensation packages that industry titans like Samsung and SK Hynix are known to offer their highly skilled employees, creating a powerful incentive for ambitious students.

The competition to secure a coveted spot in these programs is nothing short of fierce. Kim from SKKU remarked on the escalating academic caliber of incoming students, noting, “Juniors from my alma mater keep enrolling in our department every year, and I really feel it when I see that the students coming in tend to have higher and higher grades. I don’t think I would have been able to get in with my grades if I were applying now.”

Jongro Academy’s findings further illuminate this intensified competition. Applications to Samsung Electronics-affiliated contract departments rose by 6.5% in the 2026 academic year, while those for SK Hynix-linked programs saw an even more substantial increase of 12.7%. Overall, the numbers paint a stark picture: an average of 13.44 applicants vied for each position in Samsung Electronics contract courses, and 9.14 applicants competed for every available seat in SK Hynix contract departments.

Jung of Sogang University echoed these sentiments, observing that the competition rates and admission cutoffs for the 2026 academic year were demonstrably higher than those in 2025, reflecting the growing desirability and perceived value of these specialized pathways.

Scholarships, Commitments, and the Path Ahead

Within the Sogang University program, every admitted student automatically receives an SK Hynix scholarship. Those who meet the stipulated academic criteria are not only supported financially but are also guaranteed employment with the company. The department extends scholarship opportunities to students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees as well.

Jung shared her personal experience, revealing that she receives a monthly study incentive allowance of approximately 300,000 Korean won, with her tuition expenses fully covered by the scholarship. She added that additional scholarships are available based on academic performance and project achievements.

However, these generous benefits are accompanied by specific obligations. Jung explained that students must maintain a consistent Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.3 to retain their scholarship and a GPA of 2.7 to qualify for employment with SK Hynix. Furthermore, any student who withdraws from the course is required to reimburse the financial support they have received, ensuring a strong commitment from participants.

SK Hynix mandates that its sponsored graduates commit to working for the company for a period equivalent to the duration of the financial support they received. Upon joining, they enter at the same rank and receive the identical base salary and benefits as other entry-level university recruits, underscoring a structured and equitable onboarding process.

The path to employment at Samsung Electronics, while also highly advantageous, presents a slightly different structure. At the SKKU program, tuition is covered for the initial three years, contingent upon meeting certain academic benchmarks, such as maintaining minimum grade requirements. From the second half of their third year, students become eligible to enter a distinct Samsung hiring process, as described by Kim.

Kim characterized this hiring process as a “minimum procedure,” emphasizing that successful completion is a prerequisite for employment confirmation. Only those who successfully navigate this step continue to receive full tuition support throughout the remainder of their five-year program. It is important to note that the SKKU Intelligent Software department is relatively new, having commenced operations in 2024. The inaugural cohort of students is yet to graduate, and the university did not provide further details regarding scenarios where students might not clear Samsung’s employment process.

Bridging the Gap Between Company and Classroom

Samsung actively facilitates “various experiential opportunities” for SKKU scholars. These immersive experiences include participation in Samsung Electronics internship programs, visits to the company’s overseas research centers, and attendance at international academic conferences, offering students invaluable real-world exposure.

Kim recounted her experiences, mentioning visits to a Samsung overseas branch and its Suwon campus, alongside regular engagements with company representatives. Similarly, Jung described touring the SK Hynix headquarters last year and attending a future forum held on-site.

Reflecting on her academic journey, Jung highlighted a particularly impactful class from her first year. “Every week, SK Hynix employees or executives, or professors from SK Hynix University, would come and lecture on the technology or business area they are responsible for,” she shared. This direct engagement allowed students to propose solutions to pressing industry challenges directly to SK Hynix executives and receive immediate, constructive feedback.

The influence of these corporate partners extends to the very content of the courses. SK Hynix indicated to us that while formal internships or hands-on field experiences are not currently a standard offering, there are ongoing considerations for their future implementation. Samsung Electronics stated that it provides input to universities on relevant courses and curricula, though specific details regarding staff involvement in course delivery were not elaborated upon. SK Hynix confirmed its partial participation in curriculum design and review processes.

Jung further elaborated that SK Hynix employees regularly visit the campus to conduct seminars and special lectures. However, she clarified that company staff do not formally teach the university courses. For South Korea’s leading semiconductor firms, the recruitment cycle is no longer confined to the post-graduation phase.
