CNBC AI News, July 16th – Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has made a special trip to Beijing to attend the opening of the third China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE), which kicks off today.
According to the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), CCPIT Chairman Ren Hongbin met with Huang and his delegation in Beijing prior to the expo’s commencement.
Sources indicate that Huang is slated to deliver a speech in Mandarin at the CISCE opening ceremony. This will mark his first-ever public address in the Chinese language.
He admitted to feeling “excited” yet “nervous” about the speech, stating he needed to return to his hotel for some intensive Chinese practice. The pressure is on for a smooth debut!
Huang emphasized that his participation in the CISCE underscores the vital importance of global supply chains for the continued advancement of artificial intelligence.
Speaking to reporters, Huang highlighted the significance of the Chinese market for U.S. companies. His presence underscores Nvidia’s strategic focus on the region, a key battleground in the AI race.
“China is a market that is both immense and vibrant. The development of AI is progressing very rapidly in China, and I am very pleased to see it,” Huang stated. “There are 50% of the world’s AI researchers here. Therefore, it is indeed critical for U.S. companies to have a foothold in the Chinese market.”
This marks Huang’s third visit to China this year alone, demonstrating Nvidia’s commitment to the region despite geopolitical complexities.
In January, Huang spent approximately a week in China, making appearances in Shenzhen, Beijing, and Shanghai, attending company annual meetings and even dancing with employees, distributing “red envelope” gifts.
Huang previously visited Beijing on April 17th, where he held talks with CCPIT Chairman Ren Hongbin. The frequency of these visits clearly suggests the strategic importance Nvidia places on its relationship with China.
During that April meeting, Huang stated that China is a very important market for Nvidia, and the company hopes to continue its collaboration with the country. The stakes are high as Nvidia navigates the evolving landscape of US-China tech relations and the continued demand for its chips in the burgeoning Chinese AI sector. This trip signals Nvidia’s intent to play a long game in the world’s second-largest economy.
