STOCKHOLM, July 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Get ready for a race unlike any other. This October 25th, mining and metals heavyweight Boliden, in partnership with the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and development firm BecomingX, is set to host the world’s deepest marathon. The event is slated to take place a staggering 1,120 meters (over 3,600 feet) below sea level within the bowels of Boliden’s Garpenberg zinc mine.
But this isn’t just about bragging rights and subterranean scenery. The ambitious goal? To raise $1 million for charity.
“We’re incredibly pumped to host this one-of-a-kind event at Garpenberg,” says Mikael Staffas, President and CEO of Boliden. “It’s a chance to showcase the modern face of mining – an industry that’s not only technologically advanced and incredibly safe, but also committed to doing good. We see it as the ideal setting to highlight that mining can be both cutting-edge and purpose-driven. This event will undoubtedly shine a light on an industry that’s absolutely crucial for a sustainable future.”
As regular operations continue above ground, approximately 60 runners – a mix of industry insiders and representatives from civil society hailing from at least 15 countries – will tackle the full 42.195 km (26.2 miles) distance in the mine. Illumination will be provided along the route. While Boliden extended the opportunity to participate to its employees across all units, public participation is limited due to space constraints.
Adding another layer, organizers are aiming for not one, but two Guinness World Records. The first, naturally, for the world’s deepest marathon. The second? For organizing the world’s deepest marathon, highlighting the unique logistical challenges involved.
