Frustration on the road isn’t limited to drivers, it seems. A recent incident in China highlights the growing issue of “pedestrian road rage,” sparking debate among netizens.
According to local media reports, on July 30, 2025, police in Dexing City, Jiangxi Province, received a report of damaged pedestrian traffic lights at a major intersection.
Police investigations, in conjunction with local precinct officers, quickly identified a suspect, identified only as Mr. Cheng. During questioning, Cheng initially appeared nonchalant, reportedly asking, “How did the police know it was me?”. His motive? Allegedly, Cheng was infuriated by the signal timing – the length of time he was made to wait as a pedestrian. In a fit of anger, he picked up stones from the ground and smashed the traffic light.
Cheng is now facing administrative detention and is liable for the cost of repairs of the damaged traffic signals due to destruction of public property.
The incident has triggered a wave of commentary online. Many users pointed out the apparent lack of foresight, given the prevalence of surveillance cameras, and advocated for strict penalties to deter similar behavior, fearing the potential societal impact of such actions.
