Yu Chengdong on “Leading”: I Actually Talk Very Little, Only Speak When Truly Achieved

Huawei’s Richard Yu addressed the company’s use of the phrase “leading far ahead” in a recent interview, clarifying he uses it sparingly, reserved for genuine achievements. He highlighted the significant impact of U.S. sanctions, causing smartphone shipments to plummet from 240-250 million annually to just over 20 million. Yu also refuted rumors of a fine imposed by Ren Zhengfei for using the phrase, stating it has been overused and the rumors were false. The company aims to only use the term when definitively leading in a specific area.

CNBC AI News, August 17th – Huawei’s Executive Director and Chairman of the Consumer Business Group (CBG), Richard Yu, recently addressed the now-iconic phrase “遥遥领先” (yáo yáo lǐng xiān), often translated as “leading far ahead,” during an interview on CCTV Finance’s “Dialogue” program.

Yu clarified, “I actually rarely use the term ‘leading far ahead.’ Over the past decade, Huawei’s consumer devices have sometimes achieved significant breakthroughs in certain areas, and I might occasionally utter such words.”

He elaborated on the challenges Huawei faced following U.S. sanctions, noting the dramatic impact on smartphone shipments. “Before the sanctions, our annual smartphone shipments were between 240 and 250 million units. Monthly shipments were at least 20 million, sometimes even exceeding 30 million.”

“After the sanctions, the degree of our difficulties? Annual shipments plummeted to just over 20 million units – less than our previous monthly figures.” This stark contrast underscores the substantial disruption the company endured.

“Since returning to the market, the public’s support has been immense, leading to the combination and popularization of the phrase ‘leading far ahead’,” Yu stated. “We don’t frequently use the phrase. We will only say it when we have genuinely achieved that level of leadership.” The sentiment reflects a cautious approach, emphasizing tangible results over marketing hyperbole.

Rumors circulated last year, beginning with a media report in April, suggesting that Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei had internally “banned” Yu from using the phrase “leading far ahead,” allegedly imposing a fine of 10,000 yuan per utterance.

Yu dismissed the rumors in a WeChat response to reporters. Furthermore, at the AITO M7 rollout ceremony, held at the Seres factory last July, Yu reiterated his stance, stating the phrase had become overused and that no such fine existed.
