Lidl Germany is piloting SAE Level 4 autonomous, cab-less electric trucks for daily store deliveries. The vehicle operates on a dedicated route between a distribution center and a store, holding a first-of-its-kind KBA permit. This initiative aims to address driver shortages and explore automation in retail logistics, with potential for expansion to a multi-stop model.

Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous driving unit, will launch its robotaxi service in Munich, Germany, in 2027, marking its entry into the EU. The company is beginning phased testing to map roads, train systems, and adapt to local conditions. This move signifies a major global expansion beyond its U.S. operations, where it currently serves 11 cities. Waymo aims to leverage its extensive autonomous driving experience to navigate European markets, despite facing regulatory and public perception challenges.

Tesla’s German sales plummeted in October 2025, despite overall EV market growth. Only 750 units were sold, a 50% year-over-year decrease. Analysts attribute this decline to several factors: Elon Musk’s polarizing image impacting brand perception, increased competition from European and Chinese automakers offering cheaper EVs, and the discontinuation of EV purchase incentives. Tesla introduced a lower-cost Model Y in response, but its impact remains unclear. A planned government incentive program in 2026 may boost overall EV adoption but won’t necessarily favor Tesla.

Fluence Energy will develop two battery storage projects in Germany for VERBUND, totaling 92 MW/186 MWh. The projects, located in Weißenthurm-Kettig and Elsterberg-Coschütz, will stabilize the grid and support renewable energy integration. VERBUND aims to expand its storage portfolio to 1 GW by 2030, and selected Fluence based on their experience, noise protection technology, and cybersecurity measures. The projects will use modular designs for scalability. Fluence currently has 750 MW of projects completed or under construction in Germany.
