Gartner reports warehouse automation has hit a significant adoption threshold, driven by labor shortages and maturing AI technology. Four tiers of operational AI now span the logistics industry, offering enhanced optimization models and generative planning for dynamic operations. Semi-autonomous AI agents and physical automation are integrating with robotics, improving efficiency and safety. Experts advise a pragmatic approach, starting with proven use cases and gradually expanding to more advanced AI applications.

Matthews International has divested its Warehouse Automation division to Duravant for $232.1 million. This strategic sale, closing December 31, 2025, will significantly reduce Matthews’ debt, supporting its goal of a 2.5x net leverage ratio. The company will now concentrate on its core Industrial Technologies and Memorialization segments, aiming to enhance shareholder value through disciplined capital allocation and ongoing portfolio review.

Amazon has unveiled Blue Jay, a robotic system automating warehouse tasks by consolidating picking, sorting, and consolidating into a single, space-efficient workflow. Currently being tested, it handles 75% of stored items and aims to alleviate strenuous work for employees. Amidst automation efforts, Amazon faces scrutiny regarding potential job displacement, though they maintain it will lead to more rewarding roles and are offering mechatronics apprenticeships. They also introduced AR glasses for delivery drivers, enhancing safety and efficiency with visual and audio alerts.
