BlackBerry Bets on Robotics: From Iconic Phones to the Physical AI Frontier

Its fastest-growing segment within its key software division, CEO John Giamatteo told CNBC, lies in the burgeoning field of robotics, positioning the company for a significant role in the future of physical artificial intelligence.
The transformation of BlackBerry from a consumer electronics giant to a software and cybersecurity powerhouse has been a strategic pivot driven by evolving market dynamics. Central to this new direction is QNX, BlackBerry’s proprietary operating system. Giamatteo describes QNX as “safety-critical” software, a testament to its reliability and robustness, and it has already achieved widespread adoption in the automotive sector. QNX underpins a vast array of essential functions in modern vehicles, from critical braking systems to sophisticated semi-autonomous driving capabilities.
This deep-rooted expertise in safety-critical systems has made QNX a formidable player in the automotive software landscape, now embedded in an impressive 275 million vehicles globally, according to BlackBerry. However, the company is now actively extending the reach of QNX beyond the road.
“We think that could be an even faster-growing segment of the industry for things like robotics,” Giamatteo stated in a recent interview. This expansion is not focused on the high-profile, humanoid robots that have recently captured public imagination, but rather on industrial and specialized applications. Giamatteo highlighted opportunities in areas such as automated warehouse operations, robotic forklifts, and advanced systems for the medical field.
“As excited as we are about the dynamics of the automotive industry and where that’s going, these other applications around robotics and medical instruments and industrial automation represent a tremendous growth opportunity,” he elaborated. “And one that I think BlackBerry and our QNX portfolio is really well positioned to address.”
The CEO further emphasized the significance of robotics within BlackBerry’s QNX portfolio, labeling it as one of its “fastest-growing businesses.” While Giamatteo declined to disclose specific figures for robotics orders, he did reveal that the company has a substantial backlog of $950 million for QNX software, a portion of which is directly attributable to robotics.
BlackBerry’s stock performance this year reflects this strategic repositioning and anticipated growth, having doubled amid improvements in its margins and profitability. The company’s deliberate focus on future growth engines like robotics and autonomous vehicles, often categorized under the umbrella of “physical AI,” is clearly resonating with investors.
The synergy between specialized hardware, advanced AI models, and robust software is defining the next generation of robotic systems. BlackBerry’s extensive experience in the demanding automotive sector, where safety and reliability are paramount, provides a distinct advantage. This is further amplified by strategic partnerships. In April, BlackBerry announced an expanded collaboration with Nvidia, a leader in AI computing, to integrate their respective software and systems across robotics, medical technology, and industrial applications.
“Robotics is going to shift in a hardcore way… and we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity in front of us,” Giamatteo concluded, underscoring the company’s optimistic outlook on this transformative technological frontier.
