In recent days, social media platforms have been abuzz with speculation surrounding potential new features on WeChat, including the highly debated “read receipts” and “visitor logs” for Moments (the platform’s version of a social feed), sparking considerable user interest and concern.
The rumors have ignited a range of reactions. Some users have expressed apprehension, fearing such features could create awkward social dynamics. Others have voiced privacy concerns, worried about the implications of such detailed tracking.
Responding to the fervor, Tencent’s Public Relations Director, Zhang Jun, took to Weibo to address the speculation.
“I’m baffled as to why certain scenarios are continuously conjured up,” he wrote. “The buzz around Moments visitor logs, for example, began with an ‘if’.”
He further commented, “I even suspect that some individuals are intentionally leveraging these discussions to generate traffic.”
This isn’t the first time Zhang Jun has dismissed the read receipt narrative. He has consistently denied the feature’s potential implementation, indicating the company’s steadfast opposition.
In 2023, Zhang Jun highlighted that such a feature could add unnecessary social pressure for users.
Zhang Jun has been unequivocal: “WeChat has been consistently committed to not implementing this feature from the very beginning, and it will remain so in the future.”
Echoing this stance, Zhang Jun addressed similar discussions on April 9th of this year: “This is not a new topic; the same issue was brought up during a WeChat public seminar in 2018.”
