A cryptic exchange on social media has sparked speculation about a potential feud within China’s competitive tech landscape. News articles indicate the trending topic on Weibo, China’s Twitter equivalent, is centered around alleged responses from Xiaomi executives to recent comments made by a Huawei leader.
Early reactions appeared to originate from Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun, President Lu Weibing, and Group Public Relations Director Wang Hua. Each executive seemingly offered indirect rebuttals through strategically selected quotes.
Specifically, Lei Jun and Lu Weibing alluded to a quote from the Nobel laureate Mo Yan. Simultaneously, Wang Hua cited a proverb from a classical Chinese novel.
The source of the online stir stems from remarks delivered by Yu Chengdong, the Executive Director and CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, at a recent automotive industry conference. In his speech, Yu highlighted the crucial role of brand power, user experience, and product definition in the current market for electric vehicles.
Referring to the success of some new market entrants, he stated it was the core of a successful product. “They may not produce something that is especially high-quality, but still get explosive sales as they have an outstanding brand and a powerful flow of user access,” Yu said, noting their sales volume outmatched some longer industry players.
