In a heartening story that has captured the attention of online audiences, a former delivery rider is receiving much-needed support from his former employer, despite having moved on to a competitor. CNBC has learned that a 33-year-old delivery rider in Weifang, Shandong province, suffered a sudden medical emergency while on duty. He has been in a coma ever since, racking up substantial medical bills in the ICU.
Facing mounting medical expenses, the rider’s family, acting on the advice of well-wishers, reached out to the company he had previously worked for, and secured financial assistance. The company, despite the rider’s recent move to a rival firm, stepped up to help.
According to a video shared by the rider’s wife, “We received an emergency payment of 50,000 yuan the same night we applied, and an additional 50,000 yuan in major illness assistance is also in process.”
The rider’s wife also shared details about her husband, mentioning his independent nature, shaped by early life circumstances.
The company’s decision to offer financial aid, despite the rider’s employment transition, has resonated positively, highlighting a commitment to worker well-being that extends beyond current employment. This act of corporate social responsibility has offered a lifeline to the rider and his family during a critical time.
The company’s “Rider Care Program,” established in 2019, is funded jointly with its delivery service partners to support riders and their immediate families facing serious illnesses. By the end of December 2024, the program had assisted 6,173 riders and their families, distributing approximately 190 million yuan in aid.
In May of this year, the company announced an upgrade to its “Rider Major Illness Care Program,” effective June 1st.
The program has been expanded to include the minor children of contracted riders, and the coverage has been updated to include 101 serious illnesses and 51 less severe conditions, along with reimbursement for non-serious inpatient medical expenses. This proactive approach to employee welfare underscores a growing trend towards recognizing the importance of supporting workers both on and off the clock and building brand loyalty.
