Anthropic Reinforces Governance Structure with High-Profile Appointments Amidst AI Evolution
San Francisco, CA – As the generative artificial intelligence landscape continues its rapid expansion, AI safety and research company Anthropic is bolstering its independent governance framework. The company announced the appointment of Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar to its Long-Term Benefit Trust, the independent body responsible for selecting Anthropic’s board members and providing guidance to its leadership.
Cuéllar brings a wealth of experience from both public service and the non-profit sector. Having served in three U.S. presidential administrations, he also held the distinguished position of Justice on the Supreme Court of California. Currently, he chairs the board of the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, a prominent philanthropic organization. Cuéllar is also the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a role from which he will transition in July to assume leadership responsibilities at Stanford University.
“The pace of advancement in AI capabilities is unprecedented,” stated Cuéllar. “This makes the need for governance structures that seamlessly integrate private sector innovation with a strong sense of civic duty more critical than ever.”
The announcement also noted the conclusion of terms for two existing Trust members: Kanika Bahl, CEO of Evidence Action, and Zachary Robinson, CEO of the Centre for Effective Altruism. Both Bahl and Robinson were instrumental in the Trust’s establishment since its inception.
Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former executives from OpenAI, initially outlined its Long-Term Benefit Trust in its Series A funding documents. The full details of this unique governance mechanism were publicly revealed in 2023. Significantly, members of the Trust do not hold any financial stake in Anthropic, a company that has recently seen its valuation skyrocket to an impressive $350 billion.
The selection of new trustees is a collaborative process, with existing trustees consulting with the company to identify individuals who can contribute to Anthropic’s mission. The Trust’s overarching objective is to steer the company toward maximizing the societal benefits of advanced AI while diligently mitigating its potential risks. Anthropic has characterized the Trust as an ongoing “experiment,” open to refinement as the AI field evolves.
“As AI systems become increasingly sophisticated, we require leaders who have dedicated their careers to understanding technology’s profound impact on society,” commented Daniela Amodei, President of Anthropic. “We extend our sincere gratitude to Kanika Bahl and Zach Robinson for their invaluable contributions during the Trust’s foundational period; their efforts were crucial to its current standing.”
