As the 2025 National College Entrance Examination looms, a peculiar roadside sign along a highway in Xunyang County, Ankang, Shaanxi Province, has captured public attention once again.

The sign, featuring the numbers “985” and “211”—references to elite Chinese universities—is strategically positioned to coincide with the 985th and 211th kilometer marks of the highway. This seemingly coincidental placement has become a symbol of good fortune and academic aspiration, sparking a wave of celebratory videos and social media posts.

Local residents have made it a tradition to film the sign during the examination season, hoping to extend blessings to the students preparing for the challenging tests. These well-wishes have further amplified the sign’s symbolic significance, effectively transforming a simple marker into a localized landmark of hope and endeavor.

In a gesture of solidarity, Ankang traffic police have also joined in, expressing their own wishes for the students’ success. “May you achieve excellence and make the most of your youth,” they said.

The sign’s placement, which carries an inherent numerical connection to the prestigious educational system, has been in place for several years.

Notably, the sign was temporarily removed because of road construction.

For context, the 211 National Highway connects Yinchuan, Ningxia, to Rongjiang, Guizhou, more commonly known as the ‘Yinrong Line.’ The road spans several provinces, including Ningxia, Gansu, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Guangxi.
