Meta Unveils AI-Powered Personalization for Threads

Threads is launching “Dear Algo,” an AI feature letting users control their feeds via direct prompts. This mirrors chatbot interactions and signals Meta’s deeper AI integration, following recent AI enhancements on Facebook. Meta plans significant AI investment, projecting $115-$135 billion in capital expenditures this year. Threads, a competitor to X, now has 400 million monthly users and is rolling out ads. “Dear Algo” requests, made via public posts, will adjust feeds for three days, initially testing in select countries.

Meta’s Threads platform is introducing “Dear Algo,” an innovative AI-powered feature designed to give users unprecedented control over their content feeds. This new tool allows Threads users to personalize their experience by issuing direct, prompt-based commands, mirroring the interaction models seen with advanced chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

This move signifies Meta’s accelerated integration of artificial intelligence across its social media ecosystem. Earlier this week, the company rolled out AI-driven features for Facebook, enabling users to animate profile pictures and enhance images using Meta’s AI assistant.

The company’s commitment to AI is further underscored by its substantial investment plans. Meta has signaled its intention to allocate between $115 billion and $135 billion in capital expenditures for AI initiatives this year, nearly doubling its spending from the previous year when it underwent a significant restructuring of its AI division.

Threads, launched in July 2023 as a direct competitor to X (formerly Twitter), has quickly gained traction. The platform recently reported 400 million monthly active users and has begun a global rollout of advertising. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized the company’s strategic focus on AI, revealing plans to introduce and test new AI products and features throughout 2026, supported by significant investments in data center and computing infrastructure.

The “Dear Algo” feature operates through user-generated public posts prefixed with “Dear Algo.” Users can specify the types of content they wish to see more or less of. According to Meta, this feature was inspired by a growing trend of users publicly expressing their content preferences using the “Dear Algo” phrase.

Upon submission, “Dear Algo” will reportedly adjust a user’s feed for three days, aiming to keep them engaged with current conversations. Meta also allows users to re-post another user’s “Dear Algo” request, effectively adopting their content preferences. Initially, this feature will be tested with users in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, with a broader international rollout planned for subsequent phases. This development positions Threads as a key battleground in the evolving landscape of social media personalization and AI-driven user engagement.
