In a blow to Apple’s legal battles, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has denied the tech giant’s request to stay a lower court order impacting its App Store operations. This recent ruling adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing antitrust saga that has been gripping the industry.
The core of the legal dispute centers on a mandate requiring Apple to allow developers on its App Store to direct users to alternative, external payment options for in-app purchases, effectively bypassing Apple’s commission fees.
This legal action stems from the long-running antitrust fight initiated by Epic Games, the developer of the popular game “Fortnite.”
Apple, however, is not conceding defeat. The company has already signaled its intention to appeal the latest decision.
This follows an April ruling from a US federal judge, which concluded that Apple had violated a prior court order aimed at fostering greater market competition. The initial order directed Apple to open its App Store to external payment methods.
At the time, Apple issued a statement vehemently disagreeing with the court’s findings and reaffirming its commitment to fighting the decision through the appeals process.
