Snap to Launch Creator Subscriptions to Diversify Revenue

Snap Inc. is launching “Creator Subscriptions,” a new feature allowing creators to offer exclusive content for recurring revenue from fans. This initiative aims to diversify Snap’s income beyond advertising, especially as user growth slows. Creators can set prices from $4.99 to $19.99 monthly, retaining about 60% of the revenue. The feature, initially for US creators on iOS, will expand to other countries, facing competition from platforms like Patreon and YouTube.

Snap Inc. is rolling out a new subscription feature designed to empower creators with a direct channel for recurring revenue from their most dedicated fans. This move signals Snap’s strategic pivot to diversify its income streams beyond traditional advertising, especially as user growth shows signs of plateauing.

The “Creator Subscriptions” feature, currently in its initial testing phase with a select group of Snapchat creators, aims to foster a more predictable and sustainable monetization model for the platform’s talent. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel highlighted the significance of subscriber growth as a key performance indicator for the coming year in a recent investor letter.

While Snap’s existing subscription offerings, Snapchat+ and Memories Storage Plans, have seen robust growth, reaching 24 million users, the company’s overall daily active users saw a slight dip in the last quarter. This makes the introduction of direct creator subscriptions a critical initiative to bolster revenue and user engagement.

With this new functionality, Snapchat users will have the opportunity to subscribe to their favorite creators for exclusive content, including direct messages, private stories, and the ability to have their comments featured prominently. Jim Shepherd, Snap’s head of content partnerships, emphasized the feature’s focus on cultivating authentic creator-fan relationships and providing creators with a reliable income source derived from their most engaged audience.

Snap enters a competitive landscape for creator subscriptions, with established platforms like Patreon and Substack, as well as a growing number of social media giants offering similar tools. YouTube, Meta’s Facebook, and Instagram have all introduced their own subscription models, with varying revenue-sharing structures.

On Snapchat, creators will have the flexibility to set their own subscription prices, ranging from $4.99 to $19.99 per month. After platform fees, creators are expected to retain approximately 60% of the subscription revenue. Snap plans to equip creators with performance analytics to aid in optimizing their pricing strategies as the feature matures.

The initial rollout includes 15 prominent creators in the United States, with an expansion to Canada, the U.K., and France planned. This curated group features well-known personalities such as David Dobrik, Catherine Paiz, Harry Jowsey, Jeremiah Brown, and Skai Jackson.

Shepherd reiterated Snap’s commitment to providing a supportive ecosystem where creators can build sustainable careers by being authentic. Currently, Snapchat creators earn revenue through ads in Stories and Spotlight, alongside brand collaborations.

Snap believes its unique advantage lies in its distribution and discovery mechanisms, particularly its Spotlight feature, which amplifies short-form video content. This built-in engine for content visibility is seen as a key differentiator in helping creators build and nurture their fan bases.

Initially, the Creator Subscriptions feature will be available to users on iOS devices in select countries. The company has not yet announced a timeline for its availability on Android.
