Wendy Tan White, CEO of Intrinsic, a prominent Alphabet (Google’s parent company) portfolio firm, recently articulated this vision in a CNBC interview. Intrinsic is pioneering “the factory of the future,” a concept built upon intelligent robotics designed for enhanced adaptability and complex task execution.
In collaboration with the manufacturing behemoth Foxconn, Intrinsic aims to realize this ambitious vision. The joint venture, announced in November, seeks to integrate sophisticated AI into robotics, creating a more dynamic and responsive manufacturing environment.
“Our objective is not merely to refine existing processes,” Tan White stated. “We’re exploring the potential to produce a wide array of diverse products on a single production line or within a flexible cell structure, moving beyond the limitations of single-product manufacturing.”
This innovation holds particular promise for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and nations grappling with higher labor expenses. By democratizing access to advanced robotics, Intrinsic’s solutions could enable these entities to bolster their production capabilities.
“A significant focus for us is the reshoring of manufacturing,” Tan White explained. “The cost of manufacturing in certain regions can be prohibitively high. However, by offering robotics solutions akin to a software-as-a-service model, we empower businesses to establish production facilities in diverse locations.”
This strategic move into robotics aligns with a broader macroeconomic narrative surrounding AI’s potential. A November report by McKinsey & Company projected that the U.S. could unlock approximately $2.9 trillion in economic value by 2030, provided that organizations strategically redesign workflows and equip their workforce for collaborative environments involving humans, AI agents, and robots.
Intrinsic itself emerged five years ago from Google X, the company’s renowned research and “moonshot” division. Its foundational mission centers on enhancing the intelligence and accessibility of industrial robotics software, paving the way for a more automated and efficient future.
