Both strategic approaches present compelling merits, and enterprises evaluating these platforms will invariably encounter genuine trade-offs. Conversely, the overlay approach provides greater flexibility and effectively sidesteps the inherent limitation of agents that might only possess visibility into a single vendor’s data silo.

What the established incumbents possess, and what OpenAI currently lacks, are decades of institutional trust and deeply entrenched existing contractual relationships. OpenAI’s distinct advantage lies in its superior model capabilities and an increasingly credible assertion that it can manage the overarching intelligence layer for the entire enterprise, not merely within the confines of a single product family.

The Pragmatic Decisions Facing CIOs

Frontier is currently accessible to a select group of pilot customers, with broader availability anticipated in the coming months. OpenAI has not publicly disclosed pricing details, directing interested organizations to engage directly with its enterprise sales team.

For Chief Information Officers, the immediate decision is not yet a stark binary choice. The majority of large enterprises operate with a complex tapestry of Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Microsoft infrastructure simultaneously. The pertinent question is whether Frontier will evolve into an orchestration layer that effectively connects these disparate systems, or whether it will emerge as a competitive platform that begins to displace them.
