Gecko Robotics, a Pittsburgh-based robotics startup, has secured a pivotal $71 million contract with the U.S. Navy. This strategic deal is aimed at dramatically accelerating ship repair timelines, a crucial step as the U.S. government intensifies its efforts to reindustrialize and modernize the nation’s aging defense infrastructure.

The company’s innovative robotic systems are designed for versatility, capable of operating in aerial, aquatic, and vertical environments. Equipped with advanced cameras and sensors, these robots can condense a ship repair process that traditionally takes three months down to as little as two days. Gecko reports that its technology can assess necessary maintenance at a rate fifty times faster than conventional manual inspection methods.

“The current state of affairs was simply not sustainable,” stated CEO Jake Loosararian in a recent interview. “We’re talking about processes that were previously unimaginable, and these inefficiencies are precisely why it has taken an unacceptable eighteen months to get a destroyer back into operational status from dry dock.”

Loosararian highlighted that Gecko’s technology will be instrumental in supporting the Navy’s ambitious goal of achieving 80% fleet readiness by 2027. By streamlining the production and repair cycles, the Navy aims to free up personnel to focus on critical mission objectives and effectively address evolving threats.
