For three decades, Nvidia was synonymous with the immersive worlds of PC gaming. But as artificial intelligence catapulted the chipmaker to become the world’s most valuable company, its original fanbase feels increasingly sidelined. This strategic pivot, while financially lucrative, is sparking concern and a sense of betrayal among gamers.
“The gaming segment is no longer the driving force of the company. There was one point when it clearly was,” noted Stacy Rasgon of Bernstein Research. Nvidia’s pioneering graphics processing units (GPUs), which revolutionized gaming with enhanced frame rates and rendering capabilities, were initially the company’s lifeline. The GeForce 256, launched in 1999, nearly pushed Nvidia to bankruptcy, but its adoption by gamers ultimately saved the company.
Today, the landscape has dramatically shifted. With the insatiable demand for AI, nearly all of Nvidia’s revenue streams are now tied to its AI-centric products. This recalibration has inevitably led to difficult decisions regarding resource allocation. In a memory-constrained market, it’s logical for Nvidia to prioritize its highly profitable data center GPUs, such as the Hopper and Blackwell architectures. The profit margins speak for themselves: Nvidia’s compute and networking segment has averaged a staggering 69% operating margin over the past three years, a significant leap from the 40% margin seen in its consumer-focused graphics segment.
This shift has not gone unnoticed by the gaming community. “I understand that they’re going to chase that. And that breaks my heart,” expressed Greg Miller, co-founder and host of the popular podcast “Kinda Funny Games Daily.” He articulated a sentiment echoed by many: “Dance with the one who brought you. Gamers have brought you this far.” The current trajectory suggests that 2026 could mark the first year in three decades without a new generation of Nvidia’s consumer-facing GeForce line of GPUs.
While Nvidia maintains that gaming remains “hugely important” and that it is “always innovating, testing and releasing” new gaming technologies, the market whispers tell a different story. The latest RTX 50 series of GeForce GPUs was unveiled at CES in January 2025. However, with both the 2026 CES and GTC events now behind us, and no new generation announced, a significant gap in the product roadmap is evident. This innovation enabled developers to leverage GPUs for general-purpose computing, a significant departure from their primary role in graphics. The true watershed moment for modern AI arrived in 2012, when Nvidia’s GPUs and CUDA architecture powered AlexNet, a neural engine that achieved unprecedented success in an image recognition contest, effectively igniting the deep learning revolution.
The company’s strategic commitment to AI was further solidified in 2020 with the $7 billion acquisition of Mellanox Technologies, a leader in high-performance computing. Since then, Nvidia has consistently released cutting-edge GPUs for AI workloads, alongside comprehensive rack-scale systems like the Vera Rubin platform, which was recently given an exclusive first look.
While Nvidia guards the pricing of its AI chips closely, industry estimates paint a stark picture. A single Blackwell GPU is rumored to cost upwards of $40,000, with a full Vera Rubin system potentially reaching $4 million. This stands in stark contrast to Nvidia’s RTX 50-series gaming GPUs, which retail between $299 and $1,999.
The company’s GPUs have historically seen speculative price surges, particularly during the cryptocurrency booms of 2018 and 2021, when they were essential for mining Bitcoin and Ethereum. While prices corrected after mining dynamics shifted, even Nvidia’s current top-tier RTX 5090 GPU can still command double its retail price on secondary markets. This persistent high demand for previous generations might be a contributing factor to Nvidia’s perceived reluctance to rush out a new gaming hardware iteration this year.
**The Lingering Shadow of Memory Scarcity**
However, the more critical factor impacting Nvidia’s gaming segment is likely the pervasive shortage of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM). Industry reports suggest Nvidia may be scaling back production of its latest gaming GPUs by as much as 40% due to critical shortages of the essential memory components. DRAM is crucial for enabling the parallel processing capabilities that GPUs rely on.
The personal computer market, the primary destination for Nvidia’s gaming GPUs, has been disproportionately affected by these DRAM shortages. Rising memory costs translate directly into higher manufacturing expenses for GPUs, which are subsequently passed on to consumers. Gartner forecasts a 17% increase in PC prices this year, leading to a projected 10.4% decline in PC shipments.
“With how expensive all of this has gotten, it’s concerning to see prices go up on the gaming side with no signs of ever coming back down, and then Nvidia clearly chasing a completely different category of consumer,” expressed Gettys. Gartner’s prediction of a shrinking entry-level consumer PC market by 2028 further suggests a potential contraction for Nvidia’s entry-level gaming GPU offerings.
Instead, Nvidia appears to be strategically allocating its limited memory inventory towards its higher-margin AI chips. “If there are push-outs or delays on the gaming roadmap, it’s probably in large part that they probably can’t make the cards anyways because it’s hard to get the memory,” explained Rasgon. “Every bit of memory that’s out there, I think is really getting prioritized to AI compute.”
High-performance GPUs like Blackwell and Vera Rubin incorporate dense stacks of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a specialized type of DRAM. Rasgon estimates that producing one gigabyte of HBM requires approximately four times the silicon wafers compared to traditional DRAM. This intricate dynamic is effectively “starving the overall industry of the type of memory that is traditionally used for more consumer type applications. It’s just not available.”
Despite these challenges, Nvidia maintains its commitment to the gaming market. The company stated to CNBC that it continues to ship all GeForce GPUs in response to strong demand and is actively collaborating with suppliers to maximize memory availability. Yet, for some, the financial incentives remain the ultimate arbiter. “If they’re making three times the money and the stockholders are three times happier, then yeah, I do think that they will abandon gaming despite it being what got them there,” Gettys conceded.
**A “Slap in the Face” for Gamers**
Despite the broader strategic shift, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang did make a notable gaming announcement during his keynote address at the company’s annual GTC conference in March. He introduced the next iteration of its rendering software, Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) 5, set for release in the fall. DLSS is renowned for its ability to enhance frame rates by rendering games at lower resolutions and intelligently upscaling the image using AI, thereby improving performance on less powerful hardware.
However, the introduction of DLSS 5 has ignited controversy within the gaming community. Concerns have arisen that its use of generative AI to alter game visuals could fundamentally change the artistic integrity of video games. Huang’s demonstration, featuring photorealistically enhanced characters from popular titles like *Resident Evil Requiem*, *Starfield*, and *Hogwarts Legacy*, raised alarms among gamers who value the original artistic vision of game developers.
“I play video games because they’re an art form. And so I like to see the thumbprint of the creator in what I’m doing,” expressed Miller. “That raised a lot of hair on a lot of necks in the video game industry as we deal with so many layoffs, so many studio closures.”
The gaming industry has faced significant headwinds in the post-pandemic era, marked by studio closures, game cancellations, and extensive layoffs across major players like Epic Games, Microsoft’s Xbox, and Sony’s PlayStation. For gamers like Gettys, who appreciated previous DLSS versions for democratizing gaming accessibility on lower-end PCs, the generative AI enhancements feel like a betrayal. “The technology is mind-blowing for what it can do to make games run on lower-end PCs,” he said. “But then to add this generative AI stuff, it feels like a slap in the face.”
Gettys fears this development signals a march towards fully AI-generated games, which he believes is “100% the goal.” The potential for AI to displace human developers is a significant concern, amplified by Elon Musk’s recent pronouncements about his xAI game studio aiming to release an “AI-generated game” by the end of 2026. “You’re literally altering the art created by the developers. And then at a certain point you’re replacing the developers and then their studio gets closed down,” Gettys warned.
Nvidia, in a statement to CNBC, defended its approach: “Games are a creative artform that give developers the opportunity to tell engaging stories and immerse players in incredible worlds. Our RTX technologies are tools that enable game developers to achieve their creative vision – these include rendering techniques such as ray tracing and path tracing, and those enhanced by AI, like DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Frame Generation, and DLSS 5, all working together to provide the best performance and image quality.”
During his keynote, Huang asserted that AI will “revolutionize how computer graphics is done.” Addressing criticisms that DLSS 5 might homogenize game aesthetics, he firmly stated, “They’re completely wrong.” Huang emphasized that game developers will retain creative control, with the ability to “fine-tune the generative AI” to align with their specific artistic styles.
**Cloud Gaming: A Brighter Outlook?**
Despite the controversies, Nvidia’s commitment to gaming isn’t entirely absent. For over a decade, the company has offered cloud gaming through its GeForce NOW service. This platform allows users to stream games they own across various services, running on Nvidia GPUs in data centers, thus circumventing the need for high-end local hardware. GeForce NOW offers a range of subscription tiers, including a free option, and has been praised for its innovation.
“You see XBox and you see PlayStation, you see other competitors trying to get the cloud into gamers’ hands in a way that actually makes sense. And Nvidia GeForce NOW has really cracked that code,” Miller observed. Gettys lauded the platform as the best “by a landslide,” stating, “It allows millions more people access to gaming at the highest level, even if they don’t have the latest cards and all of that. And it’s truly incredible technology.”
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), with its Radeon line of GPUs, remains Nvidia’s primary competitor in the gaming GPU market. However, the persistent memory crunch poses a challenge for both companies. “If Nvidia can’t get the memory, AMD ain’t going to get the memory,” Rasgon pointed out. While both brands have dedicated fanbases, the prevailing sentiment, at least for PC gaming, leans heavily towards Nvidia. “There’s a clear favorite,” Gettys concluded. “If you’re playing on PC, you’re going to want an Nvidia card.”
