This move comes as U.S. hyperscalers are projected to channel an unprecedented $600 billion into AI infrastructure by 2026. Anthropic aims to capture a substantial share of this burgeoning market. While the company has recently announced a series of data center agreements within the United States, its European ambitions are now coming into sharper focus. A job advertisement, posted in London, reveals the recruitment of a Principal to “drive the commercial sourcing and transaction execution process” for European data center capacity deals. Anthropic has declined to comment on the specific job posting or its European data center expansion plans.
These efforts are built upon a foundation of significant existing infrastructure commitments. Earlier this week, Anthropic revealed a commitment to invest over $100 billion in Amazon Web Services technology over the next decade. Furthermore, the company recently solidified an expanded agreement with Broadcom, securing approximately 3.5 gigawatts of computing capacity. A source close to the discussions indicated that Anthropic is currently evaluating direct data center capacity acquisition deals with developers globally.
The newly advertised “Transaction Principal” position in Europe comes with a salary ranging from £225,000 to £270,000 ($303,806) and is deemed “critical” for establishing the infrastructure necessary to power Anthropic’s cutting-edge AI systems across the region. Key responsibilities for this role include identifying and negotiating commercial data center deals, managing outreach to developers, and finalizing term sheets. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of the data center market within the “FLAP-D hubs”—Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin—as well as in emerging markets such as the Nordics and Southern Europe. Anthropic is also recruiting for a similar position in Australia, underscoring its global expansion strategy.
The Nordics have emerged as a pivotal region for AI infrastructure development in Europe, largely attributed to the availability of cost-effective energy. This trend is exemplified by Microsoft’s recent announcement to secure additional compute capacity at an Nscale facility in Norway. This move follows OpenAI’s prior negotiations for compute rental with Microsoft, after initially planning to secure capacity directly from Nscale.
In March, Nebius unveiled plans to construct one of Europe’s largest AI factories in Finland, further highlighting the continent’s growing importance in AI infrastructure. Microsoft has also committed billions of dollars to data center development in Portugal and Spain since early 2025, while Oracle has announced its own cloud infrastructure initiatives in Italy.
However, the soaring cost of energy has presented challenges for some AI infrastructure projects. Earlier this month, OpenAI confirmed the suspension of its “Stargate” project in the United Kingdom, citing concerns over energy expenses and the prevailing regulatory environment. Both Anthropic and OpenAI have recently announced plans to significantly scale their European operations, underscoring the region’s strategic value in the global AI race.
