In a move that signals a major leap forward for energy storage, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), has announced the mass production and delivery of its groundbreaking 587Ah battery cells. This innovation marks a significant shift towards the next generation of energy storage solutions and solidifies CATL’s position at the forefront of the industry.
The 587Ah cells are designed to optimize energy density, lifespan, and reliability. These cells boast a high energy density of 435Wh/L, an impressive 95.5% Round Trip Efficiency (RTE) during charge and discharge cycles, and a true 25-year lifespan. CATL also emphasized the rigorous safety standards adhered to, mentioning the usage of electrochemical innovation, design innovation, and a “five-dimensional defense system” to ensure that these batteries surpass the safety measures of smaller cells.
Further analysis reveals that the 587Ah technology, combined with CATL’s “Tianheng” system, boosts overall system returns by a minimum of 5%. Furthermore, breakthroughs in mechanical structure, chemical systems, and electrode design have pushed the the initial Round Trip Efficiency (RTE) to an enviable 96.5%.
Testing has indicated that these innovative cells significantly reduce the malfunction risk caused by self-discharge, showing a dramatic reduction in comparison to stacked batteries.
Production of these 587Ah cells currently takes place at CATL’s Jining base. The Jining facility, positioned as the company’s primary and largest in northern China, operates under “Lighthouse Factory” and “zero-carbon factory” standards, showcasing CATL’s commitment to sustainable and advanced manufacturing practices. It’s worth noting that CATL already boasts 2 “Lighthouse Factories” worldwide, according to the company, putting them in a class of their own.
