Runway, a prominent American AI firm, is poised for a significant expansion in London, signaling a strategic move to capitalize on the city’s burgeoning commercial and talent landscape. This development follows similar investments by other major U.S. tech players like Anthropic and OpenAI, underscoring London’s growing appeal as a global AI hub.
The company, which is at the forefront of developing advanced “world models,” exclusively revealed to CNBC its intention to establish London as its European headquarters. Runway plans to inject over $200 million into the United Kingdom’s AI ecosystem by the close of 2028, a substantial commitment aimed at fostering innovation and growth.
This strategic expansion comes on the heels of Runway’s successful Series E funding round, which secured $315 million from a distinguished group of investors including General Atlantic, AMD Ventures, and Nvidia. This latest funding round propelled the company’s valuation to an impressive $5.3 billion, a testament to its technological prowess and market potential.
“London strategically positions us near many of our largest European clients who are already leveraging Runway’s capabilities for significant projects, including esteemed organizations like the BBC, Fremantle, and WPP,” Anastasis Germanidis, co-founder and Co-CEO of Runway, shared with CNBC. “This move also builds upon the strong research foundation we’ve already cultivated in the region.”
“The exceptional talent pool available in London made it the clear choice for our European base,” he continued. “We anticipate further expansion across the continent in the near future.”

At its core, Runway is developing “world models,” a sophisticated class of AI systems designed to learn from a diverse range of inputs, including audio, images, video, and real-world sensory data. This stands in contrast to Large Language Models (LLMs), which are primarily focused on understanding and generating human language, rather than modeling the physical world through direct interaction with sensory information.
In addition to its pioneering work on world models, Runway offers a comprehensive suite of tools for video generation and editing, empowering creators and businesses with advanced AI-driven functionalities.
“Runway’s new London hub will be instrumental in bringing cutting-edge research in world models to the UK, driving breakthroughs across a multitude of industries, from film and gaming to scientific research and robotics,” stated Kanishka Narayan, the UK’s AI Minister. “Our ambition is to attract the world’s most innovative AI firms to establish their future here, and Runway’s commitment is a prime example of this vision coming to fruition.”
Runway’s strategic expansion aligns with a broader trend of U.S. AI companies bolstering their presence in London. In April, Anthropic announced plans to significantly expand its London operations, creating office space for up to 800 employees. This announcement followed closely on the heels of OpenAI’s unveiling of its first permanent U.K. office in the capital. Meanwhile, Google is also preparing to move its employees into a new U.K. headquarters this summer, further cementing London’s status as a pivotal center for AI innovation and investment.
