Michael Truell, CEO of Cursor, confirmed the news on X, the social media platform owned by SpaceX. “OpenAI models serve about 5% of Cursor user traffic, and we’re speaking with the OpenAI team to resolve this,” Truell stated. He emphasized Cursor’s long-standing relationship with OpenAI, describing the company as “one of the very first users of OpenAI” and highlighting years of close collaboration and reliance on their platform as “neutral infrastructure for our business.”

OpenAI, in its official statement, cited a lack of confidence in SpaceX’s adherence to its terms of service, referencing what it described as “experience with Elon Musk’s companies violating contracts.” The company has set a proposed shutdown date for OpenAI models via Cursor for November 12, 2026, and indicated that no future models would be provided as the agreement concludes.

SpaceX finalized its acquisition of Cursor, the parent company of which is Anysphere, for an estimated $60 billion on August 14, according to recent financial filings. This acquisition followed SpaceX’s earlier integration of Musk’s X and xAI in February.

The decision by OpenAI to sever ties with Cursor, now under SpaceX’s umbrella, is deeply rooted in the acrimonious dispute between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, along with President Greg Brockman. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, has been embroiled in a legal battle with the AI research lab, accusing Altman and Brockman of breaching the company’s original non-profit mission. Last June, Anthropic, which currently partners with SpaceX and utilizes its compute capacity, limited direct access to its Claude AI models for Windsurf. Tom Brown, a co-founder of Anthropic, commented on X that Cursor has been a “trusted partner” and that Anthropic would continue to “increase compute to support Claude models in Cursor and are excited for what comes next with them at SpaceX.” This statement, however, drew sharp criticism from other tech executives on X, with some questioning Anthropic’s past actions regarding Windsurf and suggesting it would have been prudent to remain silent.

The ongoing friction between OpenAI and Musk, now manifesting in access restrictions for a key AI development tool, highlights the intense competition and evolving business strategies within the artificial intelligence sector.
