Bluesky: From Twitter Rival to Reddit-Inspired Platform

The social media landscape is in constant flux, and Bluesky, the decentralized platform born from the ashes of Twitter, is charting a new course. While initially positioned as a direct competitor to X (formerly Twitter) following Elon Musk’s acquisition, Bluesky’s leadership is now signaling a strategic pivot, drawing inspiration from the community-driven model of Reddit rather than attempting to replicate the “public square” of its predecessor.

Rose Wang, Bluesky’s Chief Operating Officer, articulated this shift in perspective during a recent interview, emphasizing that the platform’s future lies not in direct rivalry with X but in evolving beyond what traditional social media has been. “The world is changing rapidly, and we’re not trying to build what social used to be and get to parity,” Wang stated. She elaborated that Bluesky aims to move away from the broad, public feed model characteristic of X and Meta’s Threads, instead focusing on becoming a “useful” discovery mechanism.

“What we’ve learned through this process is that I think the public square is not the direction we want to go in,” Wang explained. “Essentially, I think it’s useful as a discovery mechanism, but we’re very inspired by companies like Reddit.” She characterized the current social media paradigm as akin to a “medieval stage” where interactions are limited to performers and an audience, suggesting a need for more nuanced and community-focused online spaces.

This strategic alignment with Reddit’s ethos is significant. Reddit, which launched in 2005 and became a public company in 2024, has cultivated a vast ecosystem of niche communities, or “subreddits,” dedicated to virtually every imaginable topic. This structure fosters deeper engagement and specialized content discovery, a stark contrast to the more ephemeral and broadcast-oriented nature of mainstream social feeds.

Bluesky’s technical foundation, built on the open-source AT Protocol, offers developers the flexibility to create diverse applications, services, and communities with enhanced control over their content. Originally incubated within Twitter in 2019 with backing from co-founder Jack Dorsey, Bluesky officially spun off in 2021. The termination of its service agreement with Twitter after Musk’s takeover marked a definitive separation, allowing Bluesky to forge its own independent path.

Despite securing $100 million in Series B funding in April 2025, Bluesky has faced user engagement challenges. Reports from late last year indicated a significant decline in daily mobile active users, a trend attributed in part to the natural user retention curve seen in many social platforms after initial growth spurts. Data from a former Bluesky engineering lead suggests a drop from a peak of 1.4 million daily active posters in late 2024 to around 600,000 currently. As of March, Bluesky reported 43 million global users, a fraction of X’s estimated 450 million worldwide users and Threads’ over 400 million monthly active users.

Wang acknowledged these fluctuations, stating that the decline “generally follows the retention curve of a lot of social companies,” but emphasized that the current user base remains substantially higher than pre-surge levels. Looking ahead, she identified key areas for development, including modernizing the platform and achieving parity in video features, particularly concerning upload speeds and video length limitations. “That’s one area that we haven’t done well in, but I do think that this is an opportunity. Our biggest challenge is our biggest opportunity,” Wang remarked.

Regarding monetization, Wang indicated that while Bluesky has not definitively ruled out advertising, the company is wary of the industry’s current fervor, noting that other companies treat the advertising business model “as if they had discovered oil.” This suggests a cautious approach to integrating advertising, potentially exploring models that are less intrusive or more aligned with the platform’s community-centric vision. The platform’s ability to leverage its open protocol and foster specialized communities will be crucial in differentiating itself and building a sustainable future in the competitive social media arena.
