The company recently completed a chainwide deployment of Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions’ ELERA Security Suite across all its self-checkout lanes. This advanced system is designed to bolster security and operational efficiency, featuring sophisticated produce recognition capabilities and loss prevention tools. Toshiba highlights that the technology utilizes edge AI for on-device processing, ensuring rapid and secure data handling. At the time of Toshiba’s announcement in December 2025, the ELERA system was already functional across self-checkout lanes in all 199 Weis locations. Notably, Weis reported that over 94% of customers opted to utilize the produce recognition feature at self-checkout, underscoring its perceived value and ease of use.

### Grocery Retailers Expand AI Applications Beyond Checkout

The integration of AI within the grocery sector is extending beyond checkout functionalities, with several retailers exploring its potential for quality control and operational improvements. Albertsons Companies, for instance, has introduced an AI-driven quality control tool specifically for produce inspection. This system is engineered to identify moldy or damaged fruits and vegetables before they reach store shelves, aiming to enhance product freshness and customer satisfaction. Initially focusing on strawberries and red and green grapes, Albertsons anticipates that this tool will lead to more consistent quality ratings and facilitate faster, more informed decision-making processes. The company also believes the system will enrich quality data analysis and help ensure inspections align with established company standards.

Albertsons, which operates over 2,000 stores including brands like Safeway, Jewel-Osco, and ACME, has developed this system to support quality inspectors within its distribution centers. The quality control system harnesses the power of computer vision to conduct produce inspections across Albertsons’ diverse store brands. It was a product of in-house development by the company’s dedicated technology and supply chain teams. The foundation of this innovative tool is Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise platform, which incorporates advanced capabilities such as Vision AI and Gemini models.
