Amazon Cloud Veteran Departs After Nearly Two Decades

A significant shift is underway at Amazon Web Services (AWS), the tech behemoth’s booming cloud computing division. Dave Brown, a long-serving executive instrumental in the development and growth of AWS, is set to depart the company at the end of this month after an impressive nearly two-decade tenure. The news was confirmed by AWS CEO Matt Garman in a recent internal memo to staff.

Brown, a senior vice president within AWS, has been a foundational figure at the cloud giant. His departure marks the end of an era for a leader who played a pivotal role in shaping some of AWS’s most critical services. Garman announced that Dave Treadwell, a high-caliber executive currently contributing to Amazon’s e-commerce operations, will step into Brown’s shoes.

“Dave has been an indispensable architect of our success at AWS,” Garman stated in his note. “His contributions to the evolution of our technology, the expansion of our business, and the cultivation of our talent are deeply valued, and I personally thank him for his tireless efforts.”

Brown’s journey with AWS began during its nascent stages. He was a key member of the original team that established and refined the foundational Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service in South Africa during the early 2000s. EC2, a cornerstone of the AWS platform, revolutionized infrastructure by offering on-demand, virtualized server instances accessible by the second, empowering businesses to scale their applications and digital presence with unprecedented flexibility and cost-efficiency.

More recently, Brown’s purview expanded to encompass AWS’s sophisticated compute and cutting-edge machine learning services, including prominent offerings like Bedrock and SageMaker. His influence extended beyond his direct operational responsibilities; he was also a valued member of Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s distinguished “S-team.” This exclusive group of 28 senior executives convenes regularly with Jassy to deliberate on and shape the company’s most critical strategic business decisions, underscoring Brown’s significant impact on Amazon’s overall direction.

In his own reflective memo, Brown expressed that the timing felt opportune for him to embark on a “new chapter” in his career. He conveyed strong confidence in the capabilities of his team and the services under his stewardship, stating that his organization is “in outstanding hands” with Treadwell at the helm.
