Amazon Scales Back AGI Team

Amazon is recalibrating its ambitious Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) unit by reducing its workforce. This strategic move aims to sharpen focus on key initiatives and customers amidst significant AI investment. While the exact number of affected employees is unspecified, the layoffs underscore Amazon’s balancing act between pouring billions into AI development and optimizing operations. This adjustment occurs within a broader context of Amazon’s workforce restructuring and substantial capital expenditures for AI infrastructure.

Amazon is trimming its workforce within its ambitious artificial general intelligence (AGI) unit, a strategic recalibration amidst a significant surge in AI investment. The tech giant confirmed the layoffs on Wednesday, declining to specify the number of affected employees or the precise areas within AGI that experienced reductions. This move underscores a complex balancing act as Amazon pours billions into AI development while simultaneously optimizing its operational structure.

The AGI division encompasses the creation of advanced AI models, alongside crucial work in silicon development and quantum computing initiatives. A company spokesperson stated, “This is a fast-moving space, and we’re sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers, so we can move faster on what counts.” This sharpened focus, they explained, necessitates “difficult decisions, including eliminating some roles within parts of our AGI organization, even as we continue to invest in the areas most important to our customers’ future.”

Reports on LinkedIn indicate that employees focused on model customization and post-training phases were among those impacted. Reuters was the first to report on these workforce reductions.

These AGI-specific layoffs occur within a broader context of Amazon’s workforce adjustments. Following a significant hiring spree during the pandemic, the company has been strategically downsizing over the past several years. This recalibration coincides with massive capital expenditures dedicated to building out its AI infrastructure. Since October, Amazon has reduced its workforce by over 30,000 employees, with ongoing, smaller-scale role eliminations continuing in recent months.

The AGI unit is central to Amazon’s broader AI strategy, a critical component in its effort to remain competitive against frontrunners such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Artificial General Intelligence, by definition, refers to AI systems capable of performing tasks at a level comparable to or exceeding human capabilities across a wide spectrum of activities.

In 2024, Amazon’s AGI group introduced its foundational model suite, codenamed “Nova.” The unit’s strategic direction gained further momentum in December when veteran cloud executive Peter DeSantis took the helm, succeeding Rohit Prasad. The AGI lab experienced a leadership transition earlier in 2026 when David Luan, who joined Amazon in 2024 through an acquihire of his startup Adept, departed the company.

Despite these personnel shifts, Amazon emphasizes its long-term commitment to AI. The spokesperson reiterated, “The company has been building large AI models for several years, and it remains one of the most important things we’re working on.”

Peter DeSantis himself acknowledged in a recent interview that Amazon’s AI models “haven’t been at the very frontier for the very largest, most demanding workloads.” He indicated ongoing efforts to bolster these models, with the ambition of developing “one of the most capable intelligent models out there.”

These strategic workforce adjustments and renewed focus on AI development are occurring as Amazon prepares to release its second-quarter earnings next week. The company has projected capital expenditures for the current year to reach a staggering $200 billion, representing an over 50% increase from 2025. To finance this aggressive AI build-out, Amazon has been raising substantial sums through debt issuance, with recent reports indicating bond sales in the tens of billions of dollars. This substantial financial commitment signals Amazon’s unwavering intent to solidify its position as a leader in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
