IBM has revised its full-year 2026 forecast downwards and reported quarterly earnings that fell short of analyst expectations, even after issuing a pre-release earnings warning last week. The tech giant announced its intention to improve its full-year pre-tax margin by approximately 1 percentage point, driven by enhanced productivity initiatives.

The company’s second-quarter performance relative to LSEG consensus revealed the following:

* **Earnings per share:** $2.93 adjusted, compared to the expected $2.97.
* **Revenue:** $17.16 billion, falling short of the projected $17.58 billion.

IBM’s revenue experienced a modest 1% year-over-year increase in the quarter. Net income for the period stood at $2.17 billion, or $2.30 per share, a slight decrease from the $2.19 billion, or $2.36 per share, recorded in the same quarter last year. These adjusted earnings figures exclude acquisition-related impacts.

Looking ahead, the company is now projecting revenue growth in constant currency for 2026 to be in the range of 4% to 5%. This represents a downward revision from the “over 5% growth” forecast previously anticipated as recently as April. Despite the adjusted revenue outlook, IBM reiterated its expectation of generating an additional $1 billion in free cash flow for the year.

The lowered estimates followed IBM’s preliminary second-quarter results announcement. CEO Arvind Krishna attributed the weaker-than-anticipated sales performance to delays in Z mainframe computer and transaction processing software sales, as organizations accelerated hardware purchases in anticipation of impending price increases. This news sent IBM’s stock into a sharp decline, marking its steepest single-day drop on record. The reported revenue and adjusted earnings per share figures on Wednesday were consistent with the preliminary numbers released the previous week.

As of the market close on Wednesday, IBM’s stock had depreciated by 30% year-to-date, contrasting with the S&P 500’s approximate 10% gain during the same period.

Delving deeper into segment performance, IBM’s high-margin software division generated $7.76 billion in revenue, marking a 5% increase. Consulting revenue remained flat at $5.33 billion. The infrastructure segment, however, saw a 7% decline, bringing in $3.84 billion, with Z mainframe revenue specifically falling by 42%.

Despite the financial headwinds, IBM highlighted significant strategic advancements during the quarter. The company announced a letter of intent to construct a U.S. quantum chip foundry, a move poised to bolster the nation’s domestic advanced computing capabilities. Furthermore, IBM introduced “Bob,” an artificial intelligence development partner designed to facilitate the transition from AI-assisted coding to production-ready software. This innovative tool has already seen adoption by over 80,000 employees, signaling a strong internal commitment to AI integration within the development lifecycle.

“IBM is accelerating productivity by scaling software development leveraging AI, increasing the effectiveness of its sales and marketing organization, and optimizing its supply chain,” the company stated in its release. “These efforts help enhance margin and free cash flow, and strengthen the company’s ability to capture significant growth opportunities.” This underscores IBM’s strategic pivot towards leveraging cutting-edge technologies like AI to drive efficiency and secure future growth, even as it navigates near-term financial adjustments. The company’s focus on productivity gains, coupled with advancements in quantum computing and AI development tools, positions it for a more robust future, albeit with an adjusted timeline for achieving its ambitious growth targets.
