Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed significant investor concerns regarding supply chain headwinds during his last earnings call as chief executive. Despite a recent stock price dip, Cook expressed confidence in Apple’s “enormous opportunities” within the artificial intelligence landscape.
Cook, who is slated to transition to the role of executive chairman on September 1st, highlighted Apple’s distinct hybrid approach to AI as a strategic advantage. While many of its tech behemoth peers lean heavily on vast cloud infrastructure, Apple’s model leverages on-device processing for certain AI workloads on iPhones and Macs. This differentiation is a crucial signal to Wall Street, underscoring the company’s capability to deliver robust AI applications as it prepares for an anticipated overhaul of Siri this autumn.
“The ability to run some percentage of requests on device is also very strategic and sort of a competitive weapon,” Cook remarked.
This contrasts sharply with the capital expenditure trends seen across the industry. Apple has maintained a notably more restrained approach to capital investment compared to hyperscale competitors like Nvidia, which are channeling billions into data centers to power advanced AI models from leading AI developers. While Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft have each committed substantial sums—often exceeding $100 billion annually—to their infrastructure build-outs, Apple’s capital expenditures in the June quarter stood at a more modest $2.46 billion, falling short of some analyst expectations. Cook, however, acknowledged a strategic increase in operating expenses:
“We have been growing our opex and spending more in AI in general,” Cook stated.
Instead of a massive investment in physical data centers, Apple’s AI strategy, branded as “Apple Intelligence,” emphasizes on-device execution. This proprietary approach harnesses the full processing power of Apple’s custom silicon, minimizing reliance on cloud connectivity. This not only promises enhanced privacy and security but also presents a potential cost-saving avenue for businesses increasingly adopting AI solutions.
Cook cited Disney as an example, noting that “creative teams are increasingly turning to Mac for on-device AI workflows that reduce overall cloud token costs and keep their IP secure.”
The true test of Apple’s hybrid AI model will come with the public release of Siri AI. The long-awaited upgrade to Apple’s intelligent assistant is expected to heavily depend on the iPhone’s processing capabilities to interpret user queries and deploy the appropriate on-device AI models. Nevertheless, for more complex AI tasks that exceed the capacity of local processing, Apple has integrated cloud-based solutions. In June, the company revealed that these tasks, such as image generation, would be handled via Google Cloud, leveraging infrastructure powered by Nvidia’s graphics processing units and Intel’s central processors.
Apple has indicated that users accessing these cloud-enabled AI features may encounter usage caps, with the possibility of expanding these limits through iCloud subscriptions. This strategic integration could open up a new monetization stream for Apple’s AI initiatives.
While Cook acknowledged on Thursday that a “complete plan” for user charges is still under development, the company’s aim is to position advanced AI capabilities as a compelling reason to subscribe to iCloud+.
“We do believe there will be people that want to use it a lot, and so we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on on iCloud+,” Cook concluded.
