Google’s AI division, DeepMind, is facing a critical juncture. With the rapid advancements and public unveilings from rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, the pressure is mounting on DeepMind’s new leadership to not only close the performance gap but to redefine the cutting edge of artificial intelligence. Koray Kavukcuoglu, elevated to Senior Vice President of DeepMind, takes the helm with a mandate to steer the unit towards more impactful, frontier-focused AI development.
In recent months, OpenAI and Anthropic have captivated the tech world with their latest AI systems, sparking both admiration for their capabilities and apprehension about their implications. Google, which acquired DeepMind in 2014, has been comparatively quieter on the frontier model front since early 2026. Kavukcuoglu, formerly the AI unit’s CTO and Google’s chief AI architect, inherits the challenge of accelerating Google’s progress in building the industry’s most sophisticated models. He succeeds DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis, who will transition to the role of organization chair.
“The overarching objective will undoubtedly be to narrow the disparities with Anthropic and OpenAI in key areas,” noted Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight. Wood suggests that Kavukcuoglu’s promotion signals a strategic shift for Google’s AI efforts, moving away from purely academic pursuits towards a more aggressive focus on frontier performance and enhancing the developer toolkit.
Competing at the Frontier of AI
Google’s AI journey has seen periods of leadership and subsequent challenges. The company set a significant benchmark with the public release of ChatGPT in 2022, a development that reshaped the AI landscape. Google responded in November 2025 with the launch of Gemini 3, a model that analysts lauded for pushing the boundaries of what was expected from contemporary frontier models.

However, 2026 has witnessed a resurgence from OpenAI and Anthropic. Anthropic’s Mythos model has introduced novel capabilities, while OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 has also garnered significant acclaim, positioning them as frontrunners in the current AI race. Following the release of Gemini 3.1 Pro in February, Google’s subsequent product iterations have not consistently challenged the frontier of AI development.
To address this, Google has reportedly formed an internal initiative named “Code Strike,” aimed at bolstering coding competencies—a critical area for the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). This strategic focus comes amid insights from industry observers who suggest Google’s prioritization of monetizable aspects, such as Search, and its ventures into multimodal AI, may have led to a relative lag in the crucial domain of coding, where competitors are perceived to have a substantial lead. A Google spokesperson, however, countered that the company’s mission to “solve intelligence” is not being sidelined and encompasses a broad range of advancements including agents, coding, robotics, and world models. They highlighted DeepMind’s ongoing contributions across these diverse fields.
DeepMind Under Kavukcuoglu’s Leadership
Kavukcuoglu represents a seasoned figure within DeepMind, having been involved with the organization since before its acquisition by Google. His leadership is expected to bring a renewed emphasis on direct competition with Anthropic and OpenAI at the frontier, especially as the unit navigates several high-profile personnel departures.
Reporting directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Kavukcuoglu will now oversee Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini application and developer teams. Pichai’s statement underscored the integrated approach to AI development under Kavukcuoglu’s purview.
This organizational restructuring is seen by analysts as a move that will sharpen the focus on large language model (LLM) advancements within DeepMind. “We believe Google is likely better positioned in the LLM race with these changes than it was without them,” commented Malik Ahmed Khan, senior equity analyst at Morningstar. Khan also noted that Demis Hassabis’ vision for DeepMind was more broadly focused on AGI beyond LLMs.

Hassabis’ leadership of DeepMind was characterized by a significant focus on areas like multimodal AI, world models, and advancements in health through initiatives such as Isomorphic Labs. Kavukcuoglu has progressively taken on more direct responsibilities over the past year, including guiding model development and presenting key Gemini releases, according to sources familiar with the DeepMind team.
Ray Wang, principal analyst at Constellation Research, interprets Kavukcuoglu’s appointment as a strategic pivot towards prioritizing execution and product development over purely deep research. “Expect faster releases, more experimentation, and an emphasis on developing to a product roadmap,” Wang stated. This shift comes at a time when Alphabet shares experienced a dip in July following reports of a delayed release for Gemini 3.5 Pro, attributed to efforts to enhance its coding capabilities.
Nick Patience, AI lead at The Futurum Group, outlines Kavukcuoglu’s immediate priorities: “The first step for Kavukcuoglu would be to ship Gemini 3.5 Pro if possible, and then prove it wasn’t a one-off by maintaining a predictable release cadence.” Beyond delivering a competitive frontier model, Patience emphasizes the crucial need to rebuild the expertise in coding and pretraining that has been lost through recent departures.

DeepMind’s historical presence in London played a significant role in fostering the UK’s AI ecosystem. Kavukcuoglu’s relocation to Google’s Mountain View headquarters signifies a potential consolidation of AI leadership. While a Google spokesperson affirmed its commitment to its London operations, the strategic implications of this leadership shift are being closely watched. Patience suggests that “Google is quietly consolidating its AI leadership out of London.”
Google’s Strategic AI Play
The announcement of this AI reshuffle led to a dip in Alphabet’s stock price on Thursday, though the company’s shares have demonstrated robust growth, increasing approximately 76% over the past 12 months. During a recent earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the significant adoption of Gemini Enterprise, with nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies reportedly utilizing the service, underscoring Google’s strong position in selling AI solutions to its cloud clientele.
Sebastian Mallaby, author of “The Infinity Machine,” a biography of Demis Hassabis, commented on the company’s commercial success: “Although the model is behind and they want to catch up and they take that seriously, the monetization of the model is doing extremely well.” He pointed to the widespread integration of Google’s AI technologies across platforms like Android and its presence in Apple’s Intelligence on iPhones as testaments to its commercial reach. Mallaby also cautioned against overemphasizing high-profile departures, stating, “It’s a big team. It’s several thousand people on the Gemini team, if you count everybody. And so we shouldn’t over-index on a few famous names.”
Brian Hopkins, VP of emerging tech and principal analyst at Forrester, believes Kavukcuoglu’s expanded responsibilities could be a significant advantage. “Models, the app, and the developer teams under one executive is how a company organizes a product group rather than a lab,” Hopkins observed. “This is something that Google knows how to do much better than OpenAI or Anthropic,” he added, suggesting that Google’s established organizational prowess in product development will be critical in its AI race.
