Amazon Aims for 1 Million Drone Deliveries with Ambitious Expansion

Alphabet’s Wing achieved over one million commercial drone deliveries earlier this year and operates across 20 U.S. markets, often in collaboration with retail giants like Walmart and delivery platforms such as DoorDash. Meanwhile, Zipline, a prominent drone delivery startup, has established a global presence across four continents, logging two million deliveries to date. Amazon’s expanded rollout suggests an intent to capture a significant share of this emerging market.

Amazon’s current drone fleet is designed to carry packages up to five pounds within a 7.5-mile radius of its operational facilities. The company has been broadening the range of eligible items by integrating its drone operations with larger robotic sort centers, which possess greater storage capacity compared to the smaller hubs historically used for same-day delivery. This strategic move enhances the variety of products available for swift drone dispatch.

Furthermore, Prime Air is actively piloting a new delivery mechanism aimed at accommodating a wider assortment of products, including more fragile items like cartons of eggs or other perishables. Carbon revealed the testing of a “gentle delivery option” that utilizes a retractable tether to lower packages to the ground, offering a more controlled and potentially safer drop compared to the current method of releasing packages from a 13-foot altitude. This tethered delivery approach is also employed by competitors like Wing and Zipline.

During the internal meeting, Carbon also addressed a concerning incident in October involving two Amazon drones that collided with a crane in Tolleson, Arizona. The crashes triggered investigations by both the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Carbon acknowledged the shortcomings, stating, “We trained our algorithms, we felt pretty good, but we found in the real world the performance just wasn’t good enough and let me tell you, that was a humbling experience.”

Adding to the operational challenges, the company is facing another FAA probe following an incident in November where a drone severed an internet cable while ascending from a customer’s yard in Waco, Texas. Amazon’s international operations have also encountered scrutiny. The UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch initiated an inquiry last month after a Prime Air drone crashed in Darlington, England. Amazon stated to the BBC that it believed its drone had come into contact with an object extending above the roof of a moving vehicle. Despite this, the company asserted that its drone operated as designed and executed a safe landing, with no reported injuries.

The company’s ongoing efforts and challenges in deploying drone technology underscore the complexities of integrating advanced aerial logistics into the commercial sphere, balancing innovation with safety, regulation, and public acceptance.
