Salesforce Shares Surge as Cloud Giant Exceeds Expectations, Defying AI Apocalypse Fears

Salesforce (CRM) Q2 2027 Earnings Release

Marc Benioff, chief executive officer of Salesforce, speaks during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Jan. 18, 2024.

Shares of Salesforce experienced a significant surge, climbing 12% in after-hours trading on Wednesday. This robust performance followed the cloud software vendor’s announcement of fiscal second-quarter results and forward-looking guidance that comfortably surpassed Wall Street’s projections.

The company’s financial report revealed a strong beat on both earnings per share and revenue against LSEG consensus estimates:

  • Adjusted Earnings Per Share: $5.90, significantly exceeding the expected $3.27.
  • Revenue: $11.35 billion, marginally surpassing the anticipated $11.32 billion.

Salesforce reported an 11% year-over-year increase in revenue for the fiscal second quarter, which concluded on July 31. Net income saw a dramatic jump of 87%, reaching $3.53 billion, or $4.29 per share, compared to $1.89 billion, or $1.96 per share, in the same period last year.

A substantial contributor to this profit surge was a $2.6 billion gain recognized from strategic investments, notably an increased stake in the prominent artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. This investment underscores Salesforce’s strategic positioning within the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The valuation of Anthropic, which raised equity funding in May, was reportedly around $965 billion, highlighting the significant potential and market interest in advanced AI development. Mirroring this trend, major tech players like Alphabet and Microsoft have also reported gains from their investments in Anthropic, signaling a broader industry trend towards AI-focused strategic partnerships and acquisitions.

Looking ahead to the fiscal third quarter, Salesforce projected adjusted earnings per share to range between $3.42 and $3.44, with revenue expected to fall between $11.42 billion and $11.50 billion. These projections are favorable compared to the LSEG consensus of $3.38 in adjusted earnings per share and $11.41 billion in revenue.

For the full fiscal year, Salesforce now anticipates revenue between $46.1 billion and $46.4 billion, representing an 11% growth at the midpoint. This revised guidance edges out the LSEG consensus of $46.11 billion and builds upon the previous guidance issued in May.

In a move that further integrates AI capabilities into its offerings, Salesforce also announced a new plugin for Anthropic’s Claude. This plugin is designed to assist salespeople by automating email composition, providing crucial information, and enabling record updates through conversational interfaces, thereby enhancing sales productivity and efficiency.

The company also highlighted significant strategic wins during the quarter, including a $1.6 billion contract from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs aimed at transforming veteran care and services. Additionally, Salesforce revealed plans to acquire customer service startup Fin for $3.6 billion, a move expected to close in the fiscal third quarter, ahead of its original schedule, signaling accelerated integration plans and a commitment to bolstering its customer engagement solutions.

Salesforce’s AI-driven products, such as Agentforce AI, are showing substantial traction. Annualized revenue from these products surpassed $1.5 billion, marking an impressive 240% year-over-year increase. This growth rate significantly outpaces the previous quarter’s expansion of over 200%. However, the company did acknowledge experiencing “headwinds and volatility” in the sales of licenses for integration and analytics software, according to Robin Washington, Salesforce’s chief operating and financial officer, during the earnings call. This nuanced observation suggests that while AI adoption is booming, certain established software segments may face transitional challenges.

Current remaining performance obligation, a key indicator of future revenue, stood at $33.5 billion, exceeding the StreetAccount consensus of $33.22 billion. This metric provides a strong outlook for continued revenue recognition in the coming year.

Despite the strong quarterly performance, Salesforce shares had seen a year-to-date decline of 22% as of Wednesday’s market close, contrasting with the S&P 500’s 12% gain. This performance gap reflects ongoing investor uncertainty regarding the impact of generative artificial intelligence on traditional software companies.

Marc Benioff, co-founder and CEO of Salesforce, directly addressed these concerns during the earnings call, stating, “This is not the SaaSpocalypse. We’ve been hearing about this for the last two quarters, these dire predictions about the end of software and how the models eat everything, but none of them have come true for us.” Benioff’s remarks aim to reassure investors that Salesforce is not only adapting to the AI era but is actively leveraging it to drive growth and innovation, rather than being disrupted by it. The company’s robust results and strategic AI investments suggest a clear path forward in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
