Nvidia Boosts Performance for DeepSeek and Qwen Amid US Restriction Concerns

Nvidia is optimizing its hardware for leading Chinese AI models like DeepSeek and Qwen to outpace competitors. This move occurs amidst U.S. lawmaker concerns over Chinese AI adoption and potential White House restrictions. Nvidia is strategically bolstering its support for leading Chinese artificial intelligence models, a move aimed at outpacing domestic competitors in hardware optimization for these burgeoning systems. This initiative arrives at a time of heightened scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers, who are increasingly concerned about the adoption of Chinese AI models by American enterprises.

The chip manufacturing titan recently unveiled a “local AI initiative featuring optimizations for top open models,” which includes prominent systems like DeepSeek’s V4 Flash and Alibaba’s Qwen 3.8, alongside established platforms from Google and Nvidia itself.

However, a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing associated with the company’s second-quarter earnings also flagged potential business risks stemming from anticipated White House restrictions on AI development originating in China.

Chinese AI models have demonstrated significant advancements in capabilities throughout 2026. Their expanding adoption by developers globally, including within the United States, has amplified anxieties among policymakers in Washington.

The accessibility of open AI models, with the most advanced often originating from China, has become a critical battleground in the escalating race for technological dominance between the U.S. and China. Open AI models offer the distinct advantage of being modifiable and self-hostable, a contrast to the proprietary, closed systems developed by industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Both Beijing and Washington are actively leveraging their political influence to secure an advantage. Reports have surfaced indicating that the Trump administration is considering new tariffs on U.S. semiconductors, a move that could reshape the global supply chain.

A White House official clarified to CNBC that “unless officially announced by the Administration, any reporting about tariffs should be regarded as baseless speculation.”

The U.S. is also exploring restrictions that could limit Nvidia’s capacity to support “third-party applications and models built on open-source foundation models originating in China,” the company stated, echoing sentiments from previous earnings reports.

Nvidia cautioned that any “regulatory control or other restriction that limits our ability to provide products and services” supporting applications built on models such as DeepSeek, Qwen, or Kimi, could have a material impact on its business operations.

Nvidia’s stock experienced a positive trajectory on Thursday, following the company’s announcement of second-quarter results that surpassed expectations, coupled with revenue guidance that exceeded market estimates. The technology giant, which commands a near-monopoly over the most advanced AI chips, has seen its stock appreciate by over 10% year-to-date in 2026.

Nvidia is not alone in advocating against U.S. government intervention in the realm of open AI models, which can be freely downloaded, modified, and self-hosted by companies. In July, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir, and over twenty other companies joined forces with Nvidia in issuing a joint statement, urging policymakers to refrain from “premature restrictions” on open-weight models.

“Providing support for models worldwide allows developers to build on the American tech stack,” an Nvidia employee, who requested anonymity due to not being authorized to disclose such information, told CNBC. “Developers using popular American and Chinese models will choose the stack that the model is optimized for, making the need to optimize for the American stack critical.”

Chinese chipmakers, including Huawei, known for its Ascend series of processors, and Alibaba, have recently announced their own hardware optimizations for open models like DeepSeek and Qwen.

“Developers will play a crucial role in building the winning AI ecosystem,” the Nvidia employee continued. “China has one of the largest populations of developers in the world, creating open-source foundation models. Every model should run best on the U.S. technology stack, encouraging nations worldwide to choose America.”

**’Growing Influence’**

Concerns are mounting that Chinese AI models, increasingly sophisticated and often more cost-effective than their American counterparts, could become the de facto standard for developing nations.

“If Chinese AI technology becomes the default for developing countries, those countries may be more likely to align themselves politically with Beijing and Chinese AI companies get a beachhead in their markets,” Daniel Remler, senior fellow in the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), told CNBC.

Nvidia’s strategic optimization of its hardware for Chinese AI models reflects their “growing influence” within the global AI ecosystem, according to Charlie Dai, VP and principal analyst at Forrester.

“By optimizing platforms such as DeepSeek and Qwen, Nvidia is reinforcing its position as the preferred infrastructure layer for AI developers and enterprises regardless of where leading models originate,” Dai added.

Nvidia announced in August that it was enhancing its hardware stack, including “day-zero support” on its RTX GPU systems for Qwen3.8-27B. The company also noted that software updates that month facilitated the ease of “clustering multiple DGX Spark systems together,” a critical capability for running Chinese models like Z.ai’s GLM 5.2 and DeepSeek V4 Flash.
