Dell Technologies’ stock surged 10% in Friday trading, propelled by RBC Capital Markets initiating coverage with an “outperform” rating and a $640 price target. This remarkable ascent follows a more than fourfold increase in Dell shares year-to-date, as the venerable PC manufacturer has solidified its position as a critical supplier of Nvidia-powered servers and associated infrastructure for the burgeoning artificial intelligence market.
Analysts at RBC highlight Dell’s strategic advantage in the current AI boom. “With no signs of slowing, we believe DELL continues to be well positioned to benefit from a multi-year AI infrastructure spending cycle,” wrote RBC analyst David Paige in a note. The firm estimates Dell’s server order backlog, representing unfulfilled orders, stands at an impressive $95 billion. Furthermore, Dell reported approximately $16.4 billion in AI server sales in its second quarter, underscoring the intense demand.
Dell’s recent second-quarter earnings report earlier this month surpassed analyst expectations, prompting the company to revise its full-year revenue forecast upward to $192 billion – a nearly 70% leap from the previous year. Executives attributed this robust outlook, in part, to increased pricing on components such as memory, a strategic move to offset rising costs and bolster profitability amidst heightened demand.
The company’s close ties with Nvidia are a significant factor in its success. Dell was among the first to ship Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell NVL72 racks, demonstrating its ability to secure critical GPU supply. This capability is crucial for serving major cloud providers and enterprises, including prominent players like CoreWeave, who are rapidly building out their AI capabilities.
Beyond its Nvidia GPU-centric offerings, Dell’s non-GPU-based products, such as storage solutions, are also experiencing substantial growth driven by AI adoption. Storage revenue, for instance, saw a 26% increase in the most recent quarter. RBC posits that Dell’s comprehensive product portfolio positions it as a one-stop-shop for organizations embarking on AI infrastructure deployment.
Paige further elaborated on Dell’s competitive edge, stating, “Dell’s best-in-class supply chain represents a competitive moat that differentiates the company during periods of supply disruption, as customers increasingly turn to Dell for a ‘calming hand’ during periods of supply volatility/constraints.” This robust supply chain management is a critical differentiator in a market often characterized by shortages and unpredictable lead times, offering a sense of stability and reliability to its clientele.
