CNBC AI News – In a move signaling a strategic pivot, Meituan, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has announced a comprehensive expansion of its instant retail operations, with plans to enhance its retail offerings.
Sources within the company indicate that the restructuring includes assurances to employees. According to internal communications, Meituan has committed to no layoffs for all full-time employees. Additionally, the company is honoring job offers to new graduates, ensuring they will join the workforce as scheduled.
The internal notifications detail Meituan’s strategic upgrade of Meituan Select. This includes continued exploration of the “next-day delivery + self-pickup” model, as well as developing new community retail ventures. Simultaneously, the company is withdrawing from certain unprofitable regions.
Meituan executives have emphasized internally the significance of this organizational adjustment and detailed plans for supporting its workforce.
Specifically, Meituan has pledged that no existing employees in Meituan Select will face layoffs.
Meituan has already finalized the integration of 快驴小象 (Kuailv Xiaoxiang) with its food and grocery operations, and is in the process of placing affected employees into other relevant roles within the company.
For newly hired graduates, especially those hired for roles in major cities nationwide, Meituan will have HR representatives present to answer inquiries and assist in the transition. For new hires in more remote locations, HR staff will proactively communicate on the arrangements.
Notably, Meituan has also stressed that employee compensation and benefits will remain unaffected.
News reports suggest that Meituan Select is undergoing a widespread shutdown across multiple regions, with the service remaining active only in select cities in Guangdong province.
Customers in multiple provinces, including Fujian, Beijing, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, and Henan, are reporting that the Meituan Select app displays a message indicating that services in their area will be suspended starting June 23rd due to “regional business adjustments.”
