On June 30th, the 2024 Tencent Sustainable Social Value Report (the “Report”) was officially released. Through a multitude of real-world scenarios, the Report systematically details Tencent’s practice of empowering social value with AI amidst the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology.
In his foreword to the report, Pony Ma, Tencent’s Chairman and CEO, stated that “AI for good” is not an external requirement for Tencent but an internalized driving force. Ma believes that AI development will enter an upward spiral of “technological innovation – technological diffusion – technological re-innovation.” Accessible products are the key carriers for technological diffusion, and AI will ultimately gain user recognition and application proliferation by creating social value.
In-House Development & Open Source: Building the Foundation for AI for Good
In a Shenzhen hospital, 43-year-old Ye Min (pseudonym) was in critical condition, suffering from shock. Upon arrival in the ICU, the medical team vigilantly monitored her vital signs. Previously, accurately identifying the cause of shock could take at least two to three hours. However, “Qiyuan,” a critical care large model jointly developed by Tencent and Mindray Medical, swiftly processed Ye Min’s medical data, delivering a diagnosis and treatment recommendations within seconds, providing crucial decision support for the medical staff.
This is just one of the AI application cases highlighted in the 2024 Tencent Sustainable Social Value Report. Amidst the powerful wave of technological advancement, AI is emerging as a significant force in transforming the world and our lives. The Report indicates that Tencent’s R&D expenditure for 2024 was approximately 70.686 billion yuan. With increased investment, Tencent’s AI strategy is accelerating its implementation, driving technological breakthroughs through the dual engines of in-house development and open source. This lays a solid technical foundation for innovating social value through AI.
Over the past year, Tencent has focused on the end-to-end development of its large models. In 2024, its self-developed Hunyuan large model introduced the deep thinking model T1 and the fast thinking model TurboS, achieving industry-leading performance in response speed and hallucination resistance.
Tencent actively contributes to the open-source community, sharing mature technologies and engaging with developers. The company has initiated nearly 200 open-source projects, ranking among the top global corporate contributors and attracting over 500,000 developers.
Beyond technological breakthroughs, Tencent is enhancing the practical application of AI across various scenarios. For instance, the AI capabilities of the Hunyuan large model are now deeply integrated into Tencent’s diverse business lines, including the WeChat ecosystem, Tencent Cloud, Tencent Yuanbao, QQ, Tencent Docs, Tencent Meeting, Tencent Maps, Ima, Tencent News, Tencent Charity, elder care and rural education products, and the “Gengyunzhe” product for village revitalization.
The Report also reveals that while Tencent is continuously pushing the boundaries of key technologies, it is also diligently cultivating industry scenarios. Currently, the Hunyuan large model is widely applied across more than 30 industries, serving as a robust digital cornerstone for industrial development.
AI’s impact on human society is unprecedented, and how we coexist with artificial intelligence is a critical question for humanity. In its latest Report, Tencent emphasizes that while pursuing AI innovation, social value must be prioritized.
Growing with Benevolence: AI Integrated into Social Responsibility
In April 2025, within the village of Foling in Zijing County, Guangdong, Tencent’s SSV “Gengyunzhe” project team conducted “The First AI Tools Class for Villagers.” Villagers gathered around their phones, posing questions to the AI assistant “Tencent Yuanbao” and “Xiao Geng,” the smart helper integrated into the village service platform.
This is an example of Tencent’s “AI in Villages” initiative featured in the Report. Tencent posits that only through AI inherently serving good, fostering trust between people and society, can product transformation and ecosystem prosperity be achieved.
Tencent’s “AI in Villages” program combines AI with rural revitalization efforts, aiming to provide AI training support to 10,000 villages across China. The initiative seeks to ensure that rural China is equipped to understand, utilize, and master AI from the outset, ushering in the AI era alongside urban centers.
Furthermore, Tencent is exploring how AI can improve the lives of the elderly, children, and rural women. In urban communities like Foshan and Suzhou, Tencent is piloting AI-powered accessibility services for the elderly, providing companionship and support. For younger generations, Tencent has developed “Penguin Reading Companion,” a product that delivers high-quality AIGC content and offers an AI curriculum series recognized by the Ministry of Education. Tencent is also utilizing AI in healthcare to assist doctors in screening for women’s cancers and congenital heart disease in children, reaching millions of people to date.
For the scientific community, Tencent supports cutting-edge research through its “WeChat AI for Science Award” and the “New Cornerstone Investigator Program,” fostering advancements in fields such as mathematics, chemistry, and life sciences.
Tencent’s exploration of AI applications in other social domains has also yielded initial results. In philanthropy, Tencent is working to enable AI to provide project summaries and insights for individual users, streamlining project review processes, and helping charitable organizations improve project descriptions and progress reports. The company also plans to offer an AI knowledge base service for philanthropic institutions.
In cultural preservation, Tencent is employing AI to aid in the deciphering of oracle bone inscriptions and the revitalization of cultural relics. For biodiversity, Tencent has developed the “Species Eye” model, which can currently identify 286 native mammal and bird species, significantly aiding conservation efforts.

The 2024 Tencent Sustainable Social Value Report highlights that as a technology company, Tencent is also building an ecosystem through thoughtful rule design and technological empowerment, aggregating dispersed acts of kindness to create greater social value collaboratively.
Ecosystem of Benevolence: Co-creating Social Value
Seeking respite under trees, eating on car hoods, napping on stairwells, or practicing the “golden rooster stands on one leg” pose on electric scooters – these are the informal resting habits of hundreds of millions of outdoor workers during their breaks. For them, having a decent place to rest is often a distant hope.
In the Report, Tencent outlines a solution for co-creating social value with societal stakeholders. In March 2025, Tencent launched the nation’s first “Love Station Map,” aggregating scattered resting spots provided by employee unions, bank and telecom branches, gas stations, and real estate agencies into a themed map. This allows outdoor workers to quickly locate more comfortable and dignified places to rest.
In May 2025, Tencent, in collaboration with 18 enterprises and social organizations, established the “Sustainable Social Value Ecosystem Alliance.” The alliance proposed five initiatives, including “practicing sustainable concepts and promoting technological innovation,” marking a significant step towards a mature corporate collaboration mechanism centered on social value. Tencent and its partners are forging a new path for co-creating social value: leveraging core corporate capabilities, fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, and ultimately cultivating a vibrant ecosystem of goodwill within a broader societal landscape.
The Report reveals that Tencent is mobilizing various forces to jointly build a “benevolence” ecosystem across multiple fields. To date, the Tencent Charity platform has facilitated over 1.5 billion acts of kindness, with the participation of more than 20,000 charitable organizations and 20,000 enterprises. This exemplifies Tencent’s role in fostering a socially positive ecosystem, where “small acts of love converge into a great tide.”
In the realm of social emergency response, Tencent, in collaboration with cities like Shenzhen and Dongguan, has established a “5-Minute Social Rescue Circle.” By partnering with companies such as Vanke, SF Express, and Gaoji Health, the initiative integrates AED equipment, volunteer first responders, and hospital resources to create a seamless “call-response-treatment” loop. From its inception in early 2023 to the end of May 2025, this program has assisted over 32,000 patients experiencing sudden illnesses with critical time windows. This model has since expanded from Shenzhen to over 10 other cities, including Beijing and Dongguan.
Furthermore, Tencent’s joint initiative with China Agricultural University to promote the “Rural CEO” program has cultivated thousands of talents across 17 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in China, leading to a broader plan with the Central Radio and TV University of Agriculture to train tens of thousands of rural CEOs. Additionally, the 19 China Resources Hope Primary Schools, built by the China Resources Charity Foundation, have partnered with Tencent and China Agricultural University to serve as new training grounds for these rural leaders.
Through numerous digital disaster relief efforts, Tencent has progressively developed its Digital Care platform. This client-centric approach accurately assesses the needs of beneficiaries and connects them with a network of service providers. Over the past year, this model has been implemented in 11 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, including Yunnan, Guangdong, and Beijing. It has engaged nearly 50 front-line social organizations and collaborated with close to 200 merchants, including JD.com, Cainiao, and local business organizations, across more than 200 projects, demonstrating a successful path from pilot to scaled implementation.
From near-instantaneous responses in emergency medical scenarios to inclusive coverage through “AI in Villages,” from the digital rebirth of cultural heritage to the construction of social emergency response networks, Tencent is using AI and technology as a connective thread to paint a picture of sustainable development in collaboration with society as a whole. As emphasized by Lawrence Wen-yi Liu, Tencent’s President, in the Report: “While the goodwill and capabilities of individual companies are valuable, they are ultimately limited. Only a vibrant innovation ecosystem can allow the goodwill of each participant to take root and flourish, converging into mighty rivers and transforming into greater social value. We are pleased to witness the emergence of an ecosystem characterized by empathy, creativity, and growth, playing an increasingly vital role in China’s sustainable development.”
