Opera x Opera GX_Built-in translation

Opera is bridging language divides for its global user base with the introduction of Opera Translate. This new, secure, and integrated translation feature is now available in the company’s flagship desktop browsers, Opera One and Opera GX. Beyond breaking down linguistic barriers, this substantial update also enhances multitasking capabilities across both browsers and introduces a new layer of personalization to Opera GX with fully customizable animated cursors.

The core of this release, Opera Translate, is designed to make international content accessible to everyone. As a highly requested feature by users of both Opera One and Opera GX, it’s seamlessly integrated. The browser automatically detects when a webpage is in a language different from the user’s default and offers an instant translation. Supporting over 40 languages, Opera Translate empowers users to explore international websites, follow global news, and navigate foreign content with ease, whether for business or leisure.

Opera Translate is powered by Lingvanex’s AI-driven technology, ensuring natural and accurate language processing. Importantly, Opera has prioritized user privacy by hosting all translation services on its own European servers. This in-house approach means translated data is processed within a strict privacy framework, keeping sensitive information away from third-party services.

“The internet is a global connector, but language can often act as a bottleneck to unlocking its full potential. By introducing Opera Translate, we’re not only opening up a world of content and ideas for our users but doing so without compromising their privacy,” said Tomasz Stawarz, Director of Product at Opera.

Opera One is also seeing significant enhancements to its Split Screen feature, informed by community feedback. Users can now access the toolbar within each tab while in Split Screen mode. This brings:

  • Expanded Toolbar Access: Users can now utilize familiar features like Pinboards, Snapshot, Flow, Bookmarks, Downloads, the Easy Setup menu, and any other customized toolbar elements while browsing side-by-side.
  • In-Toolbar Player: The Music Player is now conveniently accessible within the toolbar, even when the Split Screen feature is active.

Furthermore, the Split Screen mode is now integrated within Opera’s innovative Tab Islands. This allows users to leverage the tab grouping capabilities of Opera and incorporate their split-screen browsing sessions into any Tab Island for better organization.

Meanwhile, Opera GX is upping the ante for personalization with its latest “Browser Booster” update. Recognizing that traditional cursors are a missed opportunity for expression, Opera GX is now the first browser to offer complete customization of the mouse cursor interface. In partnership with Sweezy Cursors, Opera GX provides a library of over 30 cursor packs, featuring both static and animated designs, all applicable with a single click. This eliminates the need for external tools, tricky OS settings, or questionable extensions, offering gamers a way to infuse their online experience with the same stylistic flair they bring to their gaming setups.

“Gamers invest significant effort into perfecting their setups, from RGB lighting to in-game skins. Why then should the browser cursor remain a static, unremarkable arrow? With custom animated cursors, we’re providing another avenue for personalization, allowing our users to truly own their entire online environment. It’s about extending the unique style and identity found in-game to the tools they use every day,” commented Maciej Kocemba, Product Director at Opera GX.

The custom cursors offer several key advantages:

  • Visual Cohesion: Cursors are consistent across the entire browser UI, not just on web pages, ensuring an uninterrupted and polished aesthetic.
  • Effortless Application: Users can easily browse and apply cursor sets directly from the GX Store, with instant updates and no extra downloads or configurations.
  • Enhanced Security: Unlike third-party extensions that might pose privacy risks, Opera GX’s cursor customizations are processed and executed locally and securely within the browser.
  • Optimized Performance: These custom cursors are deeply integrated with Opera GX’s rendering engine, guaranteeing smooth performance even with sophisticated animations.
  • Future Potential: Opera plans to collaborate with gaming studios for branded cursor packs from popular titles, offering even more ways for users to express their digital identity.

In addition to the eye-catching cursors, the Browser Booster update officially brings the Tab Islands feature to the stable version of Opera GX. This empowers users with advanced organization tools, allowing them to name and assign custom colors to different Tab Islands, easily distinguishing between work, gaming, or social browsing sessions. Moreover, an entire Tab Island can now be saved as a single Speed Dial on the start page, simplifying the process of resuming specific research or gaming sessions with a single click.

To experience these new features, users can download the latest versions of Opera One and Opera GX, or simply wait for the automatic update rollout.
